The Johnson Creek Watershed Council is honored to have the opportunity, once again, to host an AmeriCorps Member through the Confluence Environmental Center in 2019-2020! Through the years, AmeriCorps Members serving with JCWC have been critical to our work on riparian reforestation, volunteer engagement, and service learning with school groups, advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all three of these areas.

In addition to doing great work, AmeriCorps service provides outstanding experiences and opportunities to connect with other practitioners in the environmental field. Two-term Member Alexis Barton says, “In the field with Noah, I learned loads about urban riparian restoration practices; supporting Courtney in the Volunteer program helped me finesse communciation strategies and consistently renewed my faith in humanity via community. I learned how to build value into a volunteer experience through the Community Science and internship programs, and the Confluence program taught me an immeasurable amount about advancing environmental and social justice.” She’s taken those skills to the Tryon Creek Watershed Council, where she now works as Program Coordinator.

“I met professionals and community members working on the many facets of restoration work from across the region, and made valuable relationships that made me not only a better practitioner, but also a better human being. Most of all, working alongside culturally-specific community groups, school groups, and youth crews taught me the importance of community solidarity in the work for resilient and livable communities,” says former Member Danielle Miles. After her service term, Danielle worked as JCWC’s Volunteer Coordinator before moving on to a career in teaching; she is now a science teacher at one of the schools she worked with during her AmeriCorps term.
