Dragonfly Surveyor Orientation
Jun 16, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
AND June 18 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Participants are needed for a pilot Dragonfly Survey project as a part of our growing Community Science program. No prior experience is required. Help JCWC document the distribution of dragonfly and damselfly species through Johnson Creek. Entomologist extraordinaire Celeste Searles Mazzacano will train volunteers in survey protocols and identification skills. Orientation will be held at the JCWC Office (1900 SE Milport Rd, Suite B, Milwaukie).
Please arrive by 5:45pm to be signed in at Orientation.
Mark your calendars: There is a corresponding field day on Saturday, June 18th from 11am to 1pm at Brookside Wetland. Parking is available along SE Brookside Drive (just west of SE 110/112th). We will practice the protocol and identification skills in the field session. Both trainings are required for surveyors.
How the surveys work: Volunteers will work on a team to conduct weekly surveys of selected sites in the Johnson Creek watershed. A commitment of approximately three surveys (one survey per month) from July through September is required. Surveys take approximately two hours, not including travel time.
Important note: Surveys require some walking on uneven terrain in warm weather. Volunteers must be sure-footed and willing to handle live insects, including the use of nets to catch and identify species. Do you have equipment? If you have binoculars, a smart phone, and/or a good camera you’re willing to use, please bring these on the surveys. (Not required, but appreciated!)
