Livestaking Trees with Crystal Springs Partnership
January 17 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
Crystal Springs Partnership and Portland Parks & Recreation team up on the regular in the name of habitat restoration! Thursday, January 17th, they will be mulching plants and livestaking native trees at the Brannen Property Natural Area near Westmoreland Park.
WHY: Livestaking involves driving freshly cut tree branches into the bare ground. When conditions are right, and the deep end does not receive any sunlight, the stakes actually sprout roots and grow a new tree! Stakes might include willow, dogwood, cottonwood, or alder and they will shade the creek. Mulch (usually organic debris like barkdust) insulates plants, helps them retain water, prevents soil compaction and inhibits invasive weeds.
WHEN: Thursday, January 17th, 9:00 AM to noon
WHERE: Brannen Property Natural Area, meet at the corner of SE 21st Ave. and Umatilla St., Portland, OR 97202
As usual for these things, dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, etc. We will provide gloves and tools but feel free to bring your own favorite shovel, mattock or whatever. Coffee, tea, and snacks provided. Children welcome with a responsible adult (we’re working on a streambank).
