***Please note this event falls on Daylight Savings time. Be prepared. 🙂
WHAT: Join us for a fall mushroom, lichen, and moss hunt in SE Portland. This hunt will help us understand more about the biodiversity, and potentially the air quality of the watershed. Thanks very much to our partners at Portland Parks and Recreation, lichenologists Elisa DiMeglio and Rob Smith at Oregon State University, and our sponsor East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District for making this project possible!
We will be taking a photo inventory of the diversity of these organisms using iNaturalist, a free online tool to record, share and discuss observations in nature. Even if you’re not sure what species you have a photo of, the app allows anyone to load photos and others on the app can help you find the ID. In the end we’ll have an online data sheet inventory of the natural area, with the whole group’s data combined!
Please load iNaturalist into your phone or computer and get comfortable using it before the event HERE. Feel free to bring a camera or just use your iphone for the photos. Also bring a hand lens if you have one.
HOW: We will split up into groups led by Lichenologists and enthusiasts to go on hunts in different parts of the natural area. We will ID on the spot when we can, take photos when we can’t, and sometimes take samples back to the field station (on site) to examine and ID under a microscope, if needed.
WHERE: at a location to be disclosed upon registration.
PLEASE: If you register and find out later you can’t make it, please let us know. This event will fill quickly and we can give your spot to someone on the waitlist. Thank you!
Thanks again to our partners at Portland Parks and Recreation, lichenologists Elisa DiMeglio and Rob Smith at Oregon State University, and our sponsors at East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District for making this project possible!
