About this Event
Birders, come participate in a survey project to help assess the impact of restoration and other activities on birds at Powell Butte! This is the second year of bird surveys that focus on prairie-nesting birds. Come to the 2-hour training to learn protocols and sign up for two or more early morning surveys during April, May, June. Data entry is easy: we use the online platform eBird. This project is a joint project of Portland Parks & Recreation, Conservation Insight and Johnson Creek Watershed Council
Calling all seasoned birders! JCWC, Conservation Insight and Portland Parks & Recreation to are about to launch the second year of monitoring Savannah Sparrow and other prairie nesting birds at Powell Butte Nature Park. You’re invited Friday, April 12th OR Saturday, April 13th from 7:30am-9:30am for a required orientation and training on the specific protocols. Meet at the Butte, bring your binoculars and we’ll provide everything else for you. We’ll do a test survey together, and the following surveys will take place every week from mid-April to June (12 weeks total). Survey date sign ups will be a part of orientation, so bring your calendars, please! Register HERE
Volunteers must have intermediate or greater birding ID skills and must use their own binoculars. All data collection is done via eBird, so there are no paper forms. Volunteers must create their own eBird.org account prior to the orientation and will do data entry with the free, downloadable eBird smartphone app. Volunteers are asked to commit to two or more survey dates. Deadline to register Thursday, March 26th.
