When: Mandatory orientation on Tuesday, October 15th from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm
- 2 surveys following orientation: Dates vary and schedule is distributed with survey locations after orientation. Surveys take 2-3 hours but can be done on your own schedule.
Where: 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland, OR 97202 (All-Saints Episcopal Church Parish Hall)
Why: JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations.
Salmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams, to the ocean, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests, which are called redds. As a surveyor, you will walk selected 1-mile sections of the creek on two separate weekends between October and December. We train you how to search for salmon and evidence of spawning, and how to record this data. Waders and necessary equipment are also provided. Limited space – register below by October 14!
Many thanks to our partners and sponsors at the City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), and East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District (EMSWCD) for making this project possible!
