It’s that time of year again! Our annual fall salmon surveys begin Thursday, October 11th with Orientation.
Training will be provided by biologists from Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and JCWC staff.
Register below by October 10!
Who: Anyone over the age of 16! Individuals between 16 & 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Mandatory orientation on Thursday, October 11th from 6pm-8pm
- 2 surveys following orientation: Dates vary and schedule is distributed with survey locations after orientation. Surveys take 2-3 hours.
Where: 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland, OR 97202 (All-Saints Episcopal Church Parish Hall)
Why: JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations.
Salmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams, to the ocean, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests, which are called redds. As a surveyor, you will walk selected 1-mile sections of the creek on two separate weekends between October 20th and December 15th. We train you how to search for salmon and evidence of spawning, and how to record this data. Waders and necessary equipment are also provided. Limited space – register below by October 10!
Many thanks to our partners and sponsors at the City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), and East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District (EMSWCD) for making this project possible!
