Inside view of Melanie’s experience at Johnson Creek!

Saturday, February 1st, Johnson Creek Watershed Council (JCWC) Speak Creek intern, Melanie, hosted “Oh Deer!” a bilingual event at Leach Botanical Garden.

This bilingual Russian/English event “Oh Deer” was lead, managed and created by Melanie Yudin. This event consisted of macro invertebrates exploration, a natural history tour and a story of how the garden came to be. A huge thanks to Leach Botanical Garden for hosting and The East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District for providing information and joining us at this event.

When I sent in my paperwork for an interview with the Johnson Creek Watershed Council, I had no idea what I was walking into. I got an email about an internship with Johnson Creek around spring of last year and I quickly filled out my application. Soon enough, I got a call back from Courtney (the coordinator of the volunteer program) and she arranged an interview with me. We got together and had an interview. A couple weeks later, I received an email from her saying that I wasn’t the right candidate for this internship, but that they had another internship later on that I should consider applying to.

I really didn’t have a good idea at this point about what this internship was about and what my objective was going to be, I just knew it was out of my comfort zone and I wanted that experience for this internship. About a month later, I came into contact with Tiffany, who would work side by side with me through this whole process.

I feel accomplished of how my event went. You can’t wing something like this, it takes a lot of planning and thought to run an event. It is difficult to start brainstorming, a few of my struggles were: setting a topic for the event, finding a space to use, and setting a date that worked with everyone. The location I decided on was “Leach Botanical Garden ”. As for a date, we went through a few dates before we finally settled on one that worked for everyone. Finding a topic to focus on was also one of my struggles. As well as writing a speech and translating it and memorizing it in Russian.

Mostly my Russian speaking portion was something I needed to work on, at home we would talk more in the English language rather than Russian. I will say that I’m proud of memorizing scientific terminology that I couldn’t even pronounce at the beginning of the week. Also, from this experience, I learned alot of management skills and how to be on my own. This experience took me out of my comfort zone when it came to speaking in Russain in front of a group full of strangers.
