Willamette River and Johnson Creek Confluence Salmon Habitat Improvement Project

Project Overview

This project is located at the Willamette River and Johnson Creek confluence in downtown Milwaukie. It will provide improved habitat complexity for numerous species, including federally listed Chinook and Coho salmon, and Steelhead trout in the Johnson Creek and Willamette River basins. In addition, this proposed project will provide long-term ecological benefits by reconnecting the channel with its floodplain.

Project Objectives

  • Create/enhance in-stream habitat for fish
  • Create off-channel refugia for juvenile salmonids
  • Increase floodplain connectivity
  • Improve riparian and upland plant communities

Project Design

This project is currently designed to a 30% level. To date, proposed treatments for habitat improvements include:

  • Placement of stable large wood structures
  • Re-placement of boulders to form clusters in-channel
  • Revegetation with native plants

Final design and permitting now complete. If our funding comes through, construction will be scheduled for summer 2010. Documents detailing project design features and proposed salmon habitat are now available.

Project Implementation

Construction for this project is not yet scheduled.
