DESCRIPTION:Join us at the newly renovated Errol Heights Park for a bird walk with ornithologist Jeff Marks. Explore new features throughout the park and habitats designed for a variety of terrestrial and aquatic birds. Jeff has graduate degrees in Wildlife Biology (breeding ecology of Long-eared Owls) and Zoology (nonbreeding ecology of Bristle-thighed Curlews). He has more than 60  journal publications on birds and is the senior author of Birds of Montana in addition to being the Executive Director of the Montana Bird Advocacy. \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RVSP \n\n\n\nWhat: Bird Walk  at Errol Heights Park with Jeff Marks \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, March 16th\, from 7:30 am – 8:30pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Errol Heights City Park (directions emailed after registration). \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and binoculars. \n\n\n\nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for walking on uneven terrain. \n\n\n\nWe will provide: Binoculars. SUMMARY:Lichen Walk at Foster Floodplain with Ruth Williams
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Foster Floodplain Natural Area on as we identify common lichen found around the Johnson Creek Watershed. There will be an initial presentation on featured lichens that we’ll likely find on the subsequent walk around the natural area. \n\n\n\nRuth Williams is a consulting arborist and plant enthusiast with degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture from UC Davis. She has been drawing and painting plants for 20 years. She teaches and guides interpretive hikes on a wide variety of ecological subjects. \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. There will be an outdoor presentation on lichen that you’ll find in the watershed\, how to identify them and the important roles they play in the ecosystem. It’s a joint project between the Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, Portland Parks and Recreation\, Conservation InSight\, and amazing community scientists like you! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nWhat: Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys \n\n\n\nWhen & Where: Virtual AND in-person training sessions required \n\n\n\nVirtual orientation (REQUIRED) on Wednesday\, March 27th from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm  \n\n\n\nOne in-person training (REQUIRED) at Powell Butte Nature Park. You can sign-up for an outdoor training session after registration. Check your email! \n\n\n\nFriday\, March 29th from 7:30 am – 9:00 am OR \n\n\n\nSaturday\, March 30th from 7:30 am – 9:00 am \n\n\n\nBoth trainings (virtual and one in-person) are required to participate in surveys. \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – April through June. Two survey dates are required (two surveys per day on two different dates) sign-ups will occur during the virtual training. Surveys typically take 30-45 minutes to complete. Surveys are to be completed within two hours of sunrise.  \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: \n\n\n\nVolunteers must have a minimum of intermediate bird identification skills. You should feel comfortable identifying most of the birds you will encounter on Powell Butte. If you’re not confident in your bird ID skills but still want to be involved\, come to the online orientation! We may be able to pair you with a more experienced birder. \n\n\n\nVolunteers must provide their own binoculars. We have a very limited number available to borrow for the season. If you need to borrow binoculars please email sara@jcwc.org.  \n\n\n\nVolunteers need an eBird account and should have eBird downloaded and set up on their phones. All data collection will take place using the eBird app. \n\n\n\nDue to Portland Parks & Recreation policies a background check and volunteer application is required to participate in these surveys.
