Join Leach Botanical Garden and Johnson Creek Watershed Council for our first ever Soil Party! Soil consultant Maria Loper will present on soil biology\, compost and give participants the chance to take a look at their soil samples under a microscope and discuss what’s present\, what’s not\, and how to improve our soils together. If there’s extra time\, Maria will also demonstrate how to create your own simple and easy vermiculture (worm) bin. This event is bilingual in Spanish and English. \nMaria Loper is an advocate for reshaping our relationship with soil\, water\, and nature. Maria leads efforts to transition growers to regenerative agriculture practices. By emphasizing the importance of diverse microorganisms in living soil\, she helps create nutrient-dense food\, soil that can retain moisture\, healthier ecosystems\, and mineral-balanced soils that support plant health and resilience. Participants\, you are encouraged to bring a soil sample from your own yard or garden. We will have a little time to look at a few soil samples from participants (samples will be chosen at random)\, samples from Maria’s own collection and discuss our observations. \nHow to prepare: If you’d like to bring a soil sample from your yard\, please follow the instructions below:\n1) Dig 3 inches deep into soil from a yard\, garden bed\, or other patch of soil you’d like sampled.\n2) Please take a sample within 24 hrs of the event.\n3) Collect the sample in a clean ziplock bag or tupperware.\n4) Don’t seal the bag or container the sample is in. \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. DESCRIPTION:Grab a pint and explore the wonderful world of Powell Butte’s bird population with us! Tom Virzi\, PhD\, Executive Director of Conservation InSight\, will discuss the ongoing grassland bird surveys taking place on Powell Butte\, how the surveys have informed management of the park\, and the future of the program! \nThis event is free to attend\, but please be prepared to purchase a drink and/or food to support Double Mountain Brewery.
