DESCRIPTION:Tour has reached maximum  capacity-however\, we are still taking RSVPs for the Science Talk.  \nJoin us for a Science Talk : \”Belly-Up to Willamette Falls; Prehistoric Lamprey in a Modern Landscape\”. \nPacific lamprey have survived for more than 500 million years – they were here before the dinosaurs. Lamprey are an important cultural food for Native Tribes in the region\, but their numbers have drastically declined. Join us for a tour of Willamette Falls followed by presentations on lamprey biology and recovery in the lower Willamette. \n5pm-7pm: Tour the Willamette Falls Legacy Project (meet at 99E and Main St.)  Must be 16 to take the tour. Tour is now full.  \n7pm-9pm: Science Talk at Trails End Saloon \nGuest speakers: \nCarson McVay is the Willamette Lamprey Biologist for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs\, and runs the Willamette Falls Lamprey Monitoring Project. \nMichael Karnosh  began working for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde in 1997 and is now the Ceded Lands Program Manager for their 20 million acres of Tribal homelands. Michael manages Tribal representation on environmental and cultural issues throughout the Tribe\’s ceded lands and other areas of cultural interest. He is a member of Oregon State Bar with extensive experience in environmental regulation\, intergovernmental relations\, project and team management\, forestry\, and fire management. \nJoin us for a tour of the falls and a cold beverage!\n$5 suggested donation. SUMMARY:World Fish Migration Day 3 events!
DESCRIPTION:World Fish Migration Day 2014 (WFMD) on May 24th is a global initiative\, with local events worldwide\, to create awareness on the importance of open rivers and migratory fish. WFMD is held to improve the publics’ understanding of the importance of open rivers and migratory fish and their needs. \nLocally\, Johnson Creek Watershed Council will host a Science Talk on Lampreys on June 3rd\, along with a tour of Willamette Falls in partnership with the  Greater Oregon City Watershed Council. \nOn May 24th NOAA Fisheries West Coast Region is hosting an event at Bonneville Dam. The public will be able to tour the dam and learn how technical innovation has changed how juvenile and adult salmon migrate to and from the project. Juvenile Chinook salmon will be migrating this time of year\, providing the public with an opportunity to witness part of their remarkable journey. For more information\, please visit http://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/Locations/ColumbiaRiver/Bonneville.aspx\” \nAlso on May 24th Tryon Creek Watershed Council will be leading an educational paddle trip on the Willamette River\, stopping at the confluences of Johnson Creek and Tryon Creek. They will launch from the Jefferson St. Boat Ramp at 9am and return by noon. Biologists and restoration professionals will discuss the importance of these tributaries to salmon and lamprey that migrate through the Willamette River system and through the heart of Portland. Naturescaping is the practice of designing (or redesigning) your landscape so that it reduces water use and decreases stormwater runoff while saving you time\, money and energy. This introductory workshop introduces the core concepts of naturescaping\, and also explores: \n\npollution prevention through the reduction/elimination of chemical use\nhow native plants naturally resist pests & tolerate drought conditions while attracting native birds\, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators to your garden\nbasic site planning principals\, and many other great natural gardening & design tips\n\nEven if you decide to enlist the help of a contractor\, you’ll have the framework to make decisions and effectively communicate the vision you have for your yard. Class will visit a nearby naturescaped project to see design principles in action. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first in a series of Science Talks in 2014: Dwellers in the Deep- Freshwater Mussels of Johnson Creek. \n  \nSince 2010\, Dr. Mazzacano has been studying the freshwater mussels of Johnson Creek in partnership with Johnson Creek\nWatershed Council. She will share the results of her research and provide a brief overview of what is known about these mysterious macroinvertebrates – their biology and life cycle.\nGuest speaker:\nDr. Celeste Mazzacano is the Aquatic Conservation Program Director at the Xerces Society. With a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Minnesota\, she has worked for over 16 years in research and education\, and recently became Editor in Chief of ARGIA\, the news journal of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas. \nJoin us for an educational evening with a local scientist.\nFood and drink available for purchase. $5 suggested donation to benefit JCWC Riparian Program.
