SUMMARY:Science in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of fun scientific exploration in the park. This year we are learning about what is in the Johnson Creek Watershed! We’ll have interactive stations about salmon\, insects and more! This event is great for elementary and pre-k age kids to discover what kinds of things contribute to a healthy watershed. \nParticipants will learn about First Foods\, participate in a salmon lifecycle obstacle course\, observe macroinvertebrates\, build a pinecone birdfeeder and create colorful craft dragonflies. \nWe’re also teaming up with SOLVE for a morning clean up from 9am-11am! \nRSVP not required\, but encouraged. RSVP here!\nWhen: Saturday\, September 27th\, 10:00am-12:00pm. Arrive early to participate in SOLVE’s clean up from 9-11am! \nWhere: Mill Park\, 6201 SE Overland St\, Milwaukie\, OR 97222 (directions below) \nWhat: Science in the Park \nHow to prepare: Bring a filled water bottle and some snacks! Feel free to bring a blanket or chairs to sit out on the grass. \nWhat we provide: Instruction and materials. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. SUMMARY:10th Annual Science Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This year’s symposium highlights the latest research and restoration projects shaping Johnson Creek and its surrounding ecosystems. From amphibian field guides to floodplain and wetland restoration\, long-term data analysis\, and the Confluence Project\, presenters will share discoveries that reveal how our watershed is changing—and what that means for the future. \nCome learn from local scientists\, graduate students\, and practitioners working to better understand and restore the health of Johnson Creek. \n  \nTo see the full line-up of speakers and purchase tickets\, click here!\n  \nWhat: Johnson Creek Science Symposium. Tickets $10. \nWhen: Tuesday\, October 21st\, 1pm-5pm. The program starts promptly at 1pm. If you arrive after 1pm you will be let in during a break in programming. There will be a 30 minute break during the programming with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments available. \nWhere: Reed College Performing Arts Building Room 320\, 3017 SE Woodstock Blvd\, Portland\, OR 97202. DESCRIPTION:This event is full\nJoin Johnson Creek Watershed Council and the City of Gresham in an effort to track amphibians in Gresham’s stormwater ponds! Surveyors will spend time wading through stormwater ponds collecting data on amphibian egg masses of four different native species. These surveys are part of a regional effort to help us learn more about amphibians and their habitats to inform conservation and restoration plans.  \n  \nWhat: Amphibian Egg Mass Surveys in Gresham \nWhen & Where:  \nOnline Training – January 29th 6:00pm-7:30pm. A Zoom link will be sent to you after registering.  \nField Training and Gear Pick-up – January 31st 10:00am-12:00noon. Brickworks Stormwater Pond in SE Gresham\, parking and access instructions will be emailed to you after registration.  \nBoth training sessions are required. \nSurvey Season – Survey groups of 2-4 people will visit the assigned site(s) 3 times throughout Feb. and March . \nSurveys involve systematically wading through ponds and gathering data on amphibian egg masses. Surveys can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. \nVolunteers need no prior experience or equipment. All will be provided. If you have your own walking stick\, waders\, and polarized sunglasses you are welcome to bring them.  \nTraining will include: \n\nHow to identify an egg mass of Pacific chorus and red-legged frogs\, and Northwestern & long-toed salamanders\nSurvey techniques\nField methods and safety\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \nChildren are permitted at some sites: Most surveys require wading in ponds and mud that ranges from ankle deep to waist deep. Some accommodations can be made. During the training we will review the relative difficulty of each survey site which you may take into consideration when choosing which site you would like to survey. Nope! If you sign-up solo we will assign you a survey group. \nIf I want to sign-up with another person do they also have to register? Including training\, about 5 to 8 hours depending on drive distance. \nCan children volunteer?
