DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Tideman Johnson Park and the Johnson Creek Watershed Council for a morning of stewardship and habitat enhancement! Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, April 6th\,  9:30 am-12:30 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact sima@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Walk east on the Trail for a little under a mile to reach the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy bike: follow the Springwater Corridor Trail to the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy car: park near the intersection of 37th and Tenino Streets (please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways or mailboxes). No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. Important to read: Park is located on SE 141st Avenue\, south of SE Foster Road. SE 141st Avenue is a dirt road. There is no parking lot or space for cars at the Park entrance. So\, we ask that you park either directly alongside Foster Road (approximate link to area: 45°28’37.3″N 122°31’03.1″W – Google Maps) or on SE 142nd Avenue\, south of Foster Road. Please be sure to not block neighbors’ driveways. Then\, walk ¼ mile down SE 141st Avenue (heading south) to the Park meeting site. Look for signs\, which will be put up ½ hour before the event. We will put up a “Volunteer Parking” sign alongside SE Foster Road and a “Volunteer Event” sign that will point you down SE 141st Avenue to the Park\, so that you know which direction to walk. Parking is available on both sides of SW 7th Street\, you can also park at Main City Park parking lot and walk south on the Springwater trail. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy Transit: From Portland\, the 9 bus on Powell. Get off at Eastman Parkway and 7th st. To honor his legacy\, we will be fundraising for BIPOC led organizations working for racial justice and leading a habitat enhancement event at Powell Butte.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe know that groups and individuals often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day\, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. Creek Crew Leaders are a HUGE piece of our restoration work at Johnson Creek! Creek Crew Leaders are a HUGE piece of our restoration work at Johnson Creek! We work with thousands of volunteers each year and with a small staff\, we can’t function without the community support of volunteers like you to teach and lead in our restoration events! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is a two-part training required to join the 2024 Creek Crew cohort.  See “How do I Join” section below to register for the training.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nOnline Webinar: Thursday January 4th 6 – 7:30pm \n\n\n\nIn-person Training: Saturday January 6th 10am-2:30pm with a 30 minute break for lunch (not provided) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nThursday Webinar: Zoom  \n\n\n\nSaturday In-person Training: Powell Butte Nature Park (directions emailed after completing the webinar) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat do Creek Crew Leaders do: \n\n\n\nCreek Crew leaders choose at least 4 volunteer days a year to help guide small groups of volunteers for our native plantings\, invasive species and trash removal parties throughout the year. Creek Crew Leaders work closely with staff members from partner organizations to co-lead events. They are also a crucial element of our larger events such as our Watershed Wide Event (in March) and the Johnson Creek Clean-Up (in August). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJCWC’s Creek Crew expands our capacity for facilitating restoration events throughout the year – we couldn’t do it without you! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy be a Creek Crew Leader: \n\n\n\n\nHave fun outdoors with cool people!\n\n\n\nDevelop and practice leadership skills\n\n\n\nLearn about ecology and restoration practices \n\n\n\nGain familiarity with Pacific Northwest plant and animal species\n\n\n\nMake friends and professional connections from diverse backgrounds\n\n\n\nGet a reference for applications to college\, jobs\, or scholarships\n\n\n\nReceive sweet Johnson Creek swag\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho are Creek Crew Leaders:  \n\n\n\n\nA new or returning Johnson Creek Watershed Council volunteer\n\n\n\nOver 18 – OR – you are under 18 but paired with a parent or guardian as a Creek Crew team\n\n\n\nExcited to attend at least 4 volunteer events (especially Watershed Wide Event\, March 4th and/or Johnson Creek Cleanup in August)\n\n\n\nAble to fill out a PP&R code of conduct\, volunteer application\, and background check\n\n\n\n\n* We work on PP&R sites in much of our habitat enhancement. To lead volunteers on PP&R sites\, they do require background checks. We will get the forms to Creek Crew applicants via email. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact  Monica@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a lunch. \n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n\n\n\nChildren unfortunately are not permitted: We recommend that all volunteers are over 18 for this role. If you are under 18 you are welcome to join if paired with a parent or guardian as a Creek Crew team for the training and all events.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event may require standing for long periods\, walking over uneven ground\, going up or down steep slopes\, bending\, and lifting heavy objects.  \n\n\n\nDirections:A zoom link and directions will be emailed after you complete the required paperwork or make other arrangements.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA huge thank you to Portland Parks and Recreation for helping to organize this event and to our generous funders that make the volunteer program possible.
