SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. DESCRIPTION:Canceled due to weather!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Martin Luther King Junior dedicated his life to advancing civil rights and fighting racism and oppression. To honor his legacy\, we will be fundraising for BIPOC led organizations working for racial justice and leading a habitat enhancement event at Powell Butte.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe know that groups and individuals often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day\, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. If you would like to participate\, we encourage everyone to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice. We recognize that people have different abilities to donate. Large or small\, your donation will help these organizations to address the most prevalent challenges in their community and continue the legacy of Dr King. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot sure who to support? This park is home to a plethora of wildlife including beaver\, woodpeckers\, ducks\, and dragonflies! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: Habitat enhancement projects include weeding\, planting\, mulching\, trash pick-up. These needs will change month to month! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, January 20th\, 9:30am-12:30pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: Errol Heights City Park (directions emailed after registration) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. DESCRIPTION:Join Johnson Creek Watershed Council and the City of Gresham in an effort to track amphibians in Gresham’s stormwater ponds! Brickworks Stormwater Pond in SE Gresham\, parking and access instructions will be emailed to you after registration.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoth training sessions are required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Survey groups of 2-4 people will visit the assigned site(s) 3 times throughout Feb. and March . \n\n\n\nSurveys involve systematically wading through ponds and gathering data on amphibian egg masses. Surveys can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers need no prior experience or equipment. All will be provided. If you have your own walking stick\, waders\, and polarized sunglasses you are welcome to bring them.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraining will include: \n\n\n\n\nHow to identify an egg mass of Pacific chorus and red-legged frogs\, and Northwestern and long-toed salamanders\n\n\n\nSurvey techniques\n\n\n\nField methods and safety\n\n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. There are about 12-15 sites that we hope to monitor around the Gresham/Fairview area.
