SUMMARY:Land Tending at Tideman Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Tideman Johnson Park and the Johnson Creek Watershed Council for a morning of stewardship and land tending! Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, April 5th\,  9:30 am-12:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \n\n\n\nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site. \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact sima@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n\n\n\nChildren are welcome: Children must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near sharp prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event may require standing or squatting/kneeling for long periods of time\, walking over uneven ground\, bending and lifting heavy objects. Bathrooms are available for this event.  \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nDirections to site:  \n\n\n\nBy transit: Take Bus #75 to SE 45th/Nehalem\, then walk about half a mile west on SE Crystal Springs  Blvd. Turn south (left) onto 37th Street and go down a steep hill to the junction of the Springwater Corridor Trail and the Johnson Creek boardwalk Or take the MAX Orange Line to SE Tacoma/Johnson Creek and walk south along the Park & Ride lot to the Springwater Corridor Trail. Walk east on the Trail for a little under a mile to reach the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy bike: follow the Springwater Corridor Trail to the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy car: park near the intersection of 37th and Tenino Streets (please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways or mailboxes). Join Leach Botanical Garden and Johnson Creek Watershed Council for our first ever Soil Party! Soil consultant Maria Loper will present on soil biology\, compost and give participants the chance to take a look at their soil samples under a microscope and discuss what’s present\, what’s not\, and how to improve our soils together. If there’s extra time\, Maria will also demonstrate how to create your own simple and easy vermiculture (worm) bin. This event is bilingual in Spanish and English. \nMaria Loper is an advocate for reshaping our relationship with soil\, water\, and nature. Maria leads efforts to transition growers to regenerative agriculture practices. By emphasizing the importance of diverse microorganisms in living soil\, she helps create nutrient-dense food\, soil that can retain moisture\, healthier ecosystems\, and mineral-balanced soils that support plant health and resilience. Maria operates a mobile microscopy lab\, offering people a firsthand look into their soil\, working to foster a deeper connection to another world. \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \nWhen: Thursday\, April 10th\, 6-8pm \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden\, 6704 SE 122nd Ave\, Portland\, OR 97236 \nWhat: We will discuss soil biology\, compost\, how to build more complex and diverse soils\, healthy soil support\, sustainable landscapes mimicking natural systems for long-term resilience and health and vermiculture. Participants\, you are encouraged to bring a soil sample from your own yard or garden. We will have a little time to look at a few soil samples from participants (samples will be chosen at random)\, samples from Maria’s own collection and discuss our observations. \nHow to prepare: If you’d like to bring a soil sample from your yard\, please follow the instructions below:\n1) Dig 3 inches deep into soil from a yard\, garden bed\, or other patch of soil you’d like sampled.\n2) Please take a sample within 24 hrs of the event.\n3) Collect the sample in a clean ziplock bag or tupperware.\n4) Don’t seal the bag or container the sample is in. \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. We are working to revegetate areas that were disturbed during construction. This park is home to a plethora of wildlife including beaver\, woodpeckers\, ducks\, and dragonflies! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nWhat: Errol Heights Land Tending projects include weeding\, planting\, mulching\, and trash pick-up.
