DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Tideman Johnson Park and the Johnson Creek Watershed Council for a morning of stewardship and habitat enhancement! Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, November 2nd\, 9:30 am-12:30 pm  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. SUMMARY:No Ivy Day at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek Watershed Council and Leach Botanical Garden are teaming up for the city-wide No Ivy Day this year! Volunteers will spend the morning in the Back 5 Community Habitat Enhancement Project area at Leach Botanical Garden removing English ivy from the riparian zones and off trees to make room for native species.   \n\n\n\nJohnson Creek Watershed Council\, together with Leach Garden\, Wisdom of the Elders\, the Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, the African Youth & Community Organization\, and experts from Portland Parks & Recreation\, Portland Bureau of Environmental Services and many dedicated volunteers are restoring several acres to healthy habitat – all without the use of herbicides. The project provides hands-on educational and community science opportunities\, with an emphasis on historically disenfranchised youth and adults. In addition to restoration steps\, we assess and analyze change through surveys of plants\, amphibians and macroinvertebrates. \n\n\n\nThe Back 5 is a habitat restoration project in progress and not currently open to the public. Volunteers will be hiking and working off-trail on uneven ground. Please dress for the weather\, wear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes\, and bring a water bottle.  Instruction\, tools\, gloves\, water and snacks will be provided. SUMMARY:ASL Tour for the Deaf Community
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek Watershed Council is partnering with Leach Botanical Garden to provide an ASL Tour for the Deaf Community. The guided garden tour will be in ASL only and is geared towards Deaf visitors and their families. \n\n\n\nLight snacks and refreshments will follow the tour with an opportunity to chat in a shady spot. While areas of the garden are wheelchair accessible\, the garden tour includes areas that are sloped and unpaved. Those with limited mobility may self tour the upper garden and join the group in the meadow for refreshments after. \n\n\n\nThis event is free with garden admission of $5.00. Leach Botanical Garden offers a Garden for All program to reduce entrance cost barriers – reach out to Max mmeyers@leachgarden.org to be included in the program for this event. \n\n\n\nThe tour route is not wheelchair accessible and will be led on uneven paths and slopes\, on a mix of gravel\, steps\, and pavement. The tour will be in ASL only; no English interpretation will be available. DESCRIPTION:Spring is a beautiful time to view wildflowers and nesting birds at Powell Butte Nature Park. Join us as we partner with Portland Parks & Recreation for a Wildflower Walk at Powell Butte for members of the Deaf Community on Saturday\, May 11th\, 10:00AM-12noon. We’ll walk a paved path near the visitor center at Powell Butte to view the wildflowers and birds. An interpreter is provided\, along with visual guides. DESCRIPTION:Calling all birders! Join our 2024 Prairie-Nesting Birds survey team! The Prairie-Nesting Bird surveys are a community science project started in 2019 to monitor grassland birds breeding in Powell Butte Nature Park. It’s a joint project between the Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, Portland Parks and Recreation\, Conservation InSight\, and amazing community scientists like you! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nWhat: Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys \n\n\n\nWhen & Where: Virtual AND in-person training sessions required \n\n\n\nVirtual orientation (REQUIRED) on Wednesday\, March 27th from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm  \n\n\n\nOne in-person training (REQUIRED) at Powell Butte Nature Park. You can sign-up for an outdoor training session after registration. Check your email! \n\n\n\nFriday\, March 29th from 7:30 am – 9:00 am OR \n\n\n\nSaturday\, March 30th from 7:30 am – 9:00 am \n\n\n\nBoth trainings (virtual and one in-person) are required to participate in surveys. \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – April through June. Two survey dates are required (two surveys per day on two different dates) sign-ups will occur during the virtual training. Surveys typically take 30-45 minutes to complete. Surveys are to be completed within two hours of sunrise.  \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: \n\n\n\nVolunteers must have a minimum of intermediate bird identification skills. You should feel comfortable identifying most of the birds you will encounter on Powell Butte. If you’re not confident in your bird ID skills but still want to be involved\, come to the online orientation! We may be able to pair you with a more experienced birder. \n\n\n\nVolunteers must provide their own binoculars. We have a very limited number available to borrow for the season. If you need to borrow binoculars please email sara@jcwc.org.  \n\n\n\nVolunteers need an eBird account and should have eBird downloaded and set up on their phones. All data collection will take place using the eBird app. \n\n\n\nDue to Portland Parks & Recreation policies a background check and volunteer application is required to participate in these surveys. Jeff has graduate degrees in Wildlife Biology (breeding ecology of Long-eared Owls) and Zoology (nonbreeding ecology of Bristle-thighed Curlews). DESCRIPTION:Save the date for Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s most unified restoration event of the year! The Watershed Wide Event is happening Saturday\, March 2nd from 8:45am -12noon. We will spread out at 10 simultaneous work parties throughout the watershed. Stick around at the end for a free lunch.Johnson Creek is a unique waterway\, providing home and habitat to lots of special wildlife and a lot of human communities. This event is a great time to come together and care for the creek and watershed as we weed\, plant and mulch helping to restore a healthier watershed.  For the past 28 years\, JCWC has been proud to participate in a community dedicated to restoring\, repairing\, and cleaning Johnson Creek. Be a part of the legacy!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLEASE RSVP. Site choices are below. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. Children are encouraged to attend this event if accompanied by an attentive adult. \n  \nAccessibility: This event is at the Gresham Library\, which is ADA accessible. \n  \nRegistration: Not required to attend. \n  \nDirections: \nBy transit: The FX2 line\, #9\, #80 or #84 bus stops near the library if you’re coming from the east or west. #21 is useful if you’re coming from the north and #82 if you’re coming from the south. \nBy bike: If you’re coming from the west\, the Springwater Corridor is a beautiful way to bike to the Gresham Library. If you’re coming from the north\, 223rd is heavily- trafficked but straightforward route. From the south and east\, there are various bike routes with limited bike lanes that you can find on Google Maps.  \nBy car: From east or west\, you can take Hwy 84 to Exit 14. Turn left onto Glisan\, right onto 223rd ave which turns into Eastman Parkway\, then take a left onto NW 3rd st to find the library. \nThank you to the City of Gresham for funding and supporting this event.

DESCRIPTION:Join Johnson Creek Watershed Council and Portland Parks & Recreation to protect trees by clearing ivy from around them at this little Natural Area through which Indian Creek runs on its way to Johnson Creek. This day is part of the city-wide effort to remove Ivy!  \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\nWhat: Join us with partner Portland Parks & Recreation to remove Ivy \nWhen: Saturday\, October 28\, 9:00 AM-noon \nWhere: Indian Creek Natural Area. 10368 SE Knapp St\, Portland\, OR 97266  (directions Below). Street parking available. \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. \nWe will provide: Instruction\, tools\, gloves\, water\, coffee/tea\, snacks and on-site portable toilet provided.
