SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \nClick here to RSVP\nWhat: Invasive species removal\, grubbing\, and weeding. \nWhen: Wednesday\, January 11th\, 2023\, 9am-12pm \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.  \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Kingsley D. Bundy Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Portland Parks & Recreation and Pleasant Valley Neighborhood Association to plant native plants on this little hidden park next to Johnson Creek. Planting native plants provides food and shelter for wildlife such as birds\, coyotes and deer. Check out the Creek in its winter glory\, and keep your eye out for wildlife as you volunteer alongside other community members—everyone welcome\, and no experience necessary! \n  \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\n  \nWhat: Planting 350-400 native plants to provide habitat for wildlife. There will be a short tour of the site at the end of the event.  \n  \nWhen: Saturday\, January 14th\, from 9am-12 noon \n  \nWhere: Kingsley D. SE 141st Avenue is a dirt road. There is no parking lot or space for cars at the Park entrance. So\, we ask that you park either directly alongside Foster Road (approximate link to area: 45°28’37.3″N 122°31’03.1″W – Google Maps) or on SE 142 nd Avenue\, south of Foster Road. Please be sure to not block neighbors’ driveways. Then\, walk ¼ mile down SE 141st Avenue (heading south) to the Park meeting site. Look for signs\, which will be put up ½ hour before the event. To honor his legacy\, we will participate in reflective conversations and activities in addition to restoring habitat. \nWe know that groups often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day\, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. \nIf you are part of a group that would like to participate\, we encourage and will prioritize offering this event to groups who choose to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice.  \nNot sure who to support? DESCRIPTION:Join Johnson Creek Watershed Council and the City of Gresham in an effort to track amphibians in Gresham’s stormwater ponds! Surveyors will spend time wading through stormwater ponds collecting data on amphibian egg masses of four different native species. These surveys are part of a regional effort to help us learn more about amphibians and their habitats to inform conservation and restoration plans. \n\n \n\nWhat: Amphibian Egg Mass Surveys in Gresham\n\nWhen & Where: \n\nOnline Training – January 26th 6:00-7:30. A Zoom link will be sent to you after registering. \n\nField Training and Gear Pick-up – January 28th 10:00-12:00. Brickworks Stormwater Pond in SE Gresham\, parking and access instructions will be emailed to you after registration. \n\nBoth training sessions are required.\n\n \n\nSurvey Season – Survey groups of 2-4 people will visit the assigned site(s) 3 times throughout Feb. and March .\n\nSurveys involve systematically wading through ponds and gathering data on amphibian egg masses. Surveys can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.\n\n \n\nVolunteers need no prior experience or equipment. All will be provided. If you have your own walking stick\, waders\, and polarized sunglasses you are welcome to bring them. \n\n \n\nTraining will include:\n\n 	 How to identify an egg mass of Pacific chorus and red-legged frogs\, and Northwestern & long-toed salamanders\n 	 Survey techniques\n 	 Field methods and safety\n\n \n\nCovid-19 safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines.
