DESCRIPTION:We just can’t stop counting amphibian egg masses! Join JCWC\, Portland Parks & Recreation\, and PP&R Ecologist\, Laura Guderyahn and learn about our native pond-breeding amphibians. At this event you will learn about different species of amphibians and their life cycles\, survey methods\, and egg mass identification. DESCRIPTION:Save the date for Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s most unified restoration event of the year! The 25th Annual Watershed Wide Event happening March 4th from 8:45am -12noon. We will spread out at 10 simultaneous work parties throughout the watershed. Stick around for lunch at the end. For nearly 50 years\, local residents have dedicated their time and energy to restore\, repair\, and clean Johnson Creek. We are proud to be part of this legacy!\n\nJohnson Creek is a unique waterway\, providing home and habitat to lots of special wildlife and a lot of human communities. This event is a great time to come together and care for the creek and watershed as we weed\, plant and mulch helping to restore a healthier watershed. Join the legacy! \n\nPLEASE RSVP. DESCRIPTION:EVENT FULL -Registration is Required \nCurious about what (or whoooo) comes out once the sun goes down? Join us as we partner with Happy Valley Parks and Recreation on a guided Park After Dark trail walk in Scouters Mountain Nature Park. Learn how to become more aware of our nocturnal neighbors – we will use our senses to discover what can be seen\, heard\, or even smelled on this fun night walk! You may even find animal tracks\, hear owl calls\, or sneak a peek at some night crawlers. \nIn the week leading up to the Park After Dark walk\, participants will be emailed links to some resources and tips on how to identify night animals by sight and sound\, so that they are well equipped once we hit the trail. On the evening of the walk\, we will meet at the top of Scouters Mountain Nature Park before sunset and JCWC will share some educational insight and lead the way on trails through the park. \nWhen: March 16th 6:45-8:00pm \nWhere: Scouters Mountain Nature Park – 11000 SE Honorable Way \nHow to Prepare:  This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers and a hat. SUMMARY:FULL - Dragonfly and Damselfly Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \nWhen: Orientation –  June 17th\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \nSurvey Season – Weekends from June 24th to October 14th. Surveys are self scheduled with your survey group. \nWhere: Indoor orientation – June 17th\, 9am-12pm\, Gresham Council Chambers\, directions emailed after RSVP.  \nOutdoor orientation – June 17th\, 1pm-4pm\, Tegart Lane pond\, corner of SW Brixton Ave and SW 43rd St in Gresham\, more directions will be provided at the indoor training.  \nSurvey Season – surveys will take place at 3 stormwater ponds in SW Gresham and Brookside Wetlands in Portland  \n  \nBOTH indoor and outdoor orientations are required to participate \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 6 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 4 surveys (about once a month) during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours (between 6-8 hours total survey time) \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle\, a snack\, and LUNCH. There are some spots to grab a quick lunch in Gresham if you want to eat out! \nWe will provide: We will provide nets and guide books\, but you are welcome to bring your own net\, guide\, binoculars\, and good camera. Volunteers must be willing to handle live insects\, including the use of nets to catch and identify species.  \nBefore the training please download and sign up for iNaturalist App on your mobile device. It has been the better part of a decade since we hosted a walking tour\, and a lot has happened since then! Our walk will include stops at the confluence with Johnson Creek\, the Brannen Natural Area site\, Westmoreland Park\, followed by a peek at the creek as it passes Westmoreland Union Manor and the Eastmoreland Golf Course. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. \nFind out what we have been up to on the Leach Back Five Website. \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhat: Invasive species removal\, grubbing\, and weeding. \n  \nWhen: Wednesday\, December 13th\, 2023\, 9am-12pm \n  \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \n  \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n  \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.  \n  \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact info@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n  \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event \n  \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n  \nAccessibility: This event may require standing or squatting/kneeling for long periods of time\, walking over uneven ground\, bending and lifting heavy objects. Bathrooms are available for this event.  \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nDirections to site: \n  \nBy transit: Take route #73 or #10 to SE Foster & 122nd. Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \n  \nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \n  \nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk.
