We work with thousands of volunteers each year and with a small staff\, we can’t function without the community support of volunteers like you to teach and lead in our restoration events!\n \nCreek Crew leaders choose at least 4 volunteer days a year to help JCWC staff and partner organizations guide small groups of volunteers for our native plantings\, invasive species and trash removal parties throughout the year. They are also a crucial element of our larger events such as our Watershed Wide Event (in March) and the Johnson Creek Clean-Up (in August). \nJCWC’s Creek Crew expands our capacity for facilitating restoration events throughout the year – we couldn’t do it without you! \nWhy be a Creek Crew Leader: \n-Have fun outdoors with cool people!\n-Develop and practice leadership skills\n-Learn about ecology and restoration practices\n-Make friends and professional connections from different backgrounds\n-Gain familiarity with Pacific Northwest plant and animal species\n-Get a reference for applications to college\, jobs\, or scholarships\n-Receive sweet Johnson Creek swag \nWho are Creek Crew Leaders:  \n-A new or returning Johnson Creek Watershed Council volunteer\n-Over 18 – OR – you are under 18 but paired with a parent or guardian as a Creek Crew team\n-Excited to attend at least 4 volunteer events (especially Watershed Wide Event\, March 4th and/or Johnson Creek Cleanup in August)\n-Able to fill out a Portland Parks and Recreation (PP&R) code of conduct\, volunteer application\, and background check \n* We work on PP&R sites in much of our habitat enhancement. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \nClick here to RSVP\nWhat: Invasive species removal\, grubbing\, and weeding. \nWhen: Wednesday\, January 11th\, 2023\, 9am-12pm \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.  \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nDirections to site: \nBy transit: Take route #73 or #10 to SE Foster & 122nd. Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Kingsley D. Bundy Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Portland Parks & Recreation and Pleasant Valley Neighborhood Association to plant native plants on this little hidden park next to Johnson Creek. Planting native plants provides food and shelter for wildlife such as birds\, coyotes and deer. Check out the Creek in its winter glory\, and keep your eye out for wildlife as you volunteer alongside other community members—everyone welcome\, and no experience necessary! \n  \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\n  \nWhat: Planting 350-400 native plants to provide habitat for wildlife. There will be a short tour of the site at the end of the event.  \n  \nWhen: Saturday\, January 14th\, from 9am-12 noon \n  \nWhere: Kingsley D. Bundy Park (directions below) \n  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. \n  \nWe will provide: Gloves\, all necessary tools and instruction. We will provide hot drinks and snacks!! \n  \nCovid-19 safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n  \nChildren are permitted: Children are welcome at this event if accompanied by an attentive adult. \n  \nAccessibility: This event may require standing or squatting/kneeling for long periods of time\, walking over uneven ground\, bending and lifting heavy objects. Here is the Google link to the actual meeting (not parking!) location: 45°28’30.8″N 122°31’05.0″W – Google Maps. \n  \nImportant to read: Park is located on SE 141 st Avenue\, south of SE Foster Road. SE 141st Avenue is a dirt road. There is no parking lot or space for cars at the Park entrance. So\, we ask that you park either directly alongside Foster Road (approximate link to area: 45°28’37.3″N 122°31’03.1″W – Google Maps) or on SE 142 nd Avenue\, south of Foster Road. Please be sure to not block neighbors’ driveways. Then\, walk ¼ mile down SE 141st Avenue (heading south) to the Park meeting site. Look for signs\, which will be put up ½ hour before the event. We will put up a “Volunteer Parking” sign alongside SE Foster Road and a “Volunteer Event” sign that will point you down SE 141st Avenue to the Park\, so that you know which direction to walk. \n  \nTri-met bus:  Tri-met does not have a bus or train station near this park. To honor his legacy\, we will participate in reflective conversations and activities in addition to restoring habitat. \nWe know that groups often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day\, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. \nIf you are part of a group that would like to participate\, we encourage and will prioritize offering this event to groups who choose to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice.  \nNot sure who to support?
