DESCRIPTION:**ATTENTION: Registration will close Friday August 18th at 12noon. Please register before this time.**\n\nThe Johnson Creek Clean-Up returns August 19th\, 2023! This is your chance to GET IN the creek and GET OUT all the trash that has accumulated over the past year. Since 2007\, volunteers like you have jumped into Johnson Creek and pulled out over 70 tons of trash from the water. Yes that’s right\, over 70 tons! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to get in the creek and remove litter from where it matters the most. See you there! \n\nArrive at your site at 9:00 am to meet your team and Creek Captain and learn how to be safe in the water. Spend ~3 hours in the creek picking up trash\, then travel to Johnson Creek Park to have lunch at 12 noon.\n\n\n\nWhat: Remove trash from Johnson Creek! Get in the water or stay on land and help remove tons of trash from in and around the creek. Stick around afterward for FREE lunch\, award ceremony and time to connect with your watershed community.\n\nWhen: Saturday\, August 19th\, from 9:00 am – 1pm\, including FREE lunch\n\nWhere: About a dozen sites throughout the watershed! See site descriptions below. Detailed directions to your site will be emailed to you before the event. Lunch will be at Johnson Creek Park. \n\nHow to register: Registration is open now!! Registration will close at 12noon on August 18th.\n\n 	Carefully read the site descriptions below. Each site is different and some are more physically challenging than others.\n 	Pick the site at which you want to volunteer.\n 	 Register for ONLY the specific site at which you will volunteer.\n 	 If you are coming as part of a group\, each person in your group needs to register separately.\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy. You will be walking in the creek in your shoes. We recommend light-weight shoes like sneakers\, running shoes\, or breathable hiking boots that will drain easily\, rather than heavy boots that will stay water-logged. Do not wear sandals\, crocs\, etc.–it’s not safe! However\, you may want to bring an extra set of footwear to change into at the end. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack.\n\nWe will provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, plus free lunch at the end of the event. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact monica@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. Sorry\, we cannot provide waders for this event.\n\nChildren unfortunately are not permitted. This event involves wading in deep water and contact with potentially harmful materials\, such as broken glass\, and is not suitable for children. Youth 14 years old and older are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult.\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness.\n\nAccessibility: This event may require wading in water greater than 2 feet deep (see site descriptions for details; not all sites require wading)\, standing for long periods\, walking over uneven ground\, going up or down steep slopes\, bending\, and lifting heavy objects. SUMMARY:FULL - Dragonfly and Damselfly Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \nWhen: Orientation –  June 17th\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \nSurvey Season – Weekends from June 24th to October 14th. Surveys are self scheduled with your survey group. \nWhere: Indoor orientation – June 17th\, 9am-12pm\, Gresham Council Chambers\, directions emailed after RSVP.  \nOutdoor orientation – June 17th\, 1pm-4pm\, Tegart Lane pond\, corner of SW Brixton Ave and SW 43rd St in Gresham\, more directions will be provided at the indoor training.  \nSurvey Season – surveys will take place at 3 stormwater ponds in SW Gresham and Brookside Wetlands in Portland  \n  \nBOTH indoor and outdoor orientations are required to participate \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 6 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 4 surveys (about once a month) during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours (between 6-8 hours total survey time) \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. There are some spots to grab a quick lunch in Gresham if you want to eat out! \nWe will provide: We will provide nets and guide books\, but you are welcome to bring your own net\, guide\, binoculars\, and good camera. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact info@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare.  \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Anyone under the age of 16 is required to be accompanied by an attentive adult.  \nAccessibility: These surveys require walking/standing/squatting for up to two hours in 65-80 degree weather. Surveys take place on the banks of ponds that may be steep and slippery\, surveyors must have solid footing. Volunteers must be willing to handle live insects\, including the use of nets to catch and identify species.  \nBefore the training please download and sign up for iNaturalist App on your mobile device. DESCRIPTION:Save the date for Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s most unified restoration event of the year! The 25th Annual Watershed Wide Event happening March 4th from 8:45am -12noon. We will spread out at 10 simultaneous work parties throughout the watershed. Stick around for lunch at the end. For nearly 50 years\, local residents have dedicated their time and energy to restore\, repair\, and clean Johnson Creek. We are proud to be part of this legacy!\n\nJohnson Creek is a unique waterway\, providing home and habitat to lots of special wildlife and a lot of human communities. This event is a great time to come together and care for the creek and watershed as we weed\, plant and mulch helping to restore a healthier watershed. Join the legacy! \n\nPLEASE RSVP. DESCRIPTION:We just can’t stop counting amphibian egg masses! Join JCWC\, Portland Parks & Recreation\, and PP&R Ecologist\, Laura Guderyahn and learn about our native pond-breeding amphibians. At this event you will learn about different species of amphibians and their life cycles\, survey methods\, and egg mass identification. Construction is currently happening\, and the goal is that sometime late next year we will be able to enjoy the new amenities of the Park: ADA-accessible trails\, nature play area\, Portland “loo” (bathroom)\, picnic tables\, basketball court\, and more! Check it out: Errol Heights Park Project | Portland.gov. In the meantime\, staff\, volunteers and members of the public are not allowed in the Park because of construction zone safety concerns. DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Tideman Johnson Park and the Johnson Creek Watershed Council for a morning of stewardship and habitat enhancement! Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \nRSVP HERE!\nWhen: Saturday\, December 3rd\,  9am-12pm(first Saturday of the month) \nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \nTask: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site \nWhat to wear: dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. \nWhat to bring: a mask is required when 6-foot social distancing cannot be maintained. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat we provide: gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near sharp prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event. \nRSVP HERE!\nDIRECTIONS TO SITE \nBy transit: Take Bus #75 to SE 45th/Nehalem\, then walk about half a mile west on SE Crystal Springs  Blvd. Turn south (left) onto 37th Street and go down a steep hill to the junction of the Springwater Corridor Trail and the Johnson Creek boardwalk Or take the MAX Orange Line to SE Tacoma/Johnson Creek and walk south along the Park & Ride lot to the Springwater Corridor Trail. Walk east on the Trail for a little under a mile to reach the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \nBy bike: follow the Springwater Corridor Trail to the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \nBy car: park near the intersection of 37th and Tenino Streets (please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways or mailboxes). DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n  \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds.
