Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \n\n\n\nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \n\n\n\nClick here to RSVP\n\n\n\nWhen: Orientation –  June 8th\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Weekends from June to October. This outfall water will regularly contain varying amounts of fertilizer\, lawn chemicals\, heavy metals\, highway runoff\, and other chemicals that are toxic to salmonids and other life. JCWC is looking to photograph and record data of each outfall in the Johnson Creek watershed mainstem. This data will not only be immensely helpful in understanding how stormwater is impacting Johnson Creek\, but will also help us and our partners identify future projects and priorities both in the near and long term. Identifying sources and quality of runoff may also allow for future projects and initiatives. Volunteers will be given maps with outfall locations and may survey the sites at their own pace and may receive additional maps if desired. When surveying\, volunteers should wear clothes for a variety of environments. JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \n\n\n\nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Volunteers will spend the morning in the Back 5 Community Habitat Enhancement Project area at Leach Botanical Garden removing English ivy from the riparian zones and off trees to make room for native species.   \n\n\n\nJohnson Creek Watershed Council\, together with Leach Garden\, Wisdom of the Elders\, the Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, the African Youth & Community Organization\, and experts from Portland Parks & Recreation\, Portland Bureau of Environmental Services and many dedicated volunteers are restoring several acres to healthy habitat – all without the use of herbicides. The project provides hands-on educational and community science opportunities\, with an emphasis on historically disenfranchised youth and adults. In addition to restoration steps\, we assess and analyze change through surveys of plants\, amphibians and macroinvertebrates. \n\n\n\nThe Back 5 is a habitat restoration project in progress and not currently open to the public. These surveys are part of a regional effort to help us learn more about amphibians and their habitats to inform conservation and restoration plans.  \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: Amphibian Egg Mass Surveys in Gresham \n\n\n\nWhen & Where:  \n\n\n\nOnline Training – January 23th 6:00pm-7:30pm. It’s a joint project between the Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, Portland Parks and Recreation\, Conservation InSight\, and amazing community scientists like you! \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \nWhat: Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys \n  \nWhen & Where: Virtual AND in-person training sessions required \nVirtual orientation (REQUIRED) on Wednesday\, April 2nd from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm  \nOne in-person training (REQUIRED) at Powell Butte Nature Park. You can sign-up for an outdoor training session after registration. Check your email! \nFriday\, April 4th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am OR \nSaturday\, April 5th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am \nBoth trainings (virtual and one in-person) are required to participate in surveys. \nSurvey Season – April through June. Two survey dates are required (two surveys per day on two different dates) sign-ups will occur during the virtual training. Surveys typically take 30-45 minutes to complete. Surveys are to be completed within two hours of sunrise.  \nHow to prepare: \nVolunteers must have a minimum of intermediate bird identification skills. You should feel comfortable identifying most of the birds you will encounter on Powell Butte. If you’re not confident in your bird ID skills but still want to be involved\, come to the online orientation! We may be able to pair you with a more experienced birder. \nVolunteers must provide their own binoculars. We have a very limited number available to borrow for the season. If you need to borrow binoculars please email sara@jcwc.org.  \nVolunteers need an eBird account and should have eBird downloaded and set up on their phones. All data collection will take place using the eBird app. \nDue to Portland Parks & Recreation policies a background check and volunteer application is required to participate in these surveys. Those forms will be sent to you after registration. If you have questions please contact sara@jcwc.org.  \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \nAccessibility: These surveys require walking along dirt/gravel paths for up to 2 hours at a time. These surveys require the use of binoculars and the ability to identify birds by sound.
