Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site. \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Walk east on the Trail for a little under a mile to reach the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy bike: follow the Springwater Corridor Trail to the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy car: park near the intersection of 37th and Tenino Streets (please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways or mailboxes). DESCRIPTION:This Event is Cancelled!\n  \nGather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! SUMMARY:Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys
DESCRIPTION:Calling all birders! Join our 2025 Prairie-Nesting Birds survey team! The Prairie-Nesting Bird surveys are a community science project started in 2019 to monitor grassland birds breeding in Powell Butte Nature Park. It’s a joint project between the Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, Portland Parks and Recreation\, Conservation InSight\, and amazing community scientists like you! \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \nWhat: Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys \n  \nWhen & Where: Virtual AND in-person training sessions required \nVirtual orientation (REQUIRED) on Wednesday\, April 2nd from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm  \nOne in-person training (REQUIRED) at Powell Butte Nature Park. You can sign-up for an outdoor training session after registration. Check your email! \nFriday\, April 4th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am OR \nSaturday\, April 5th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am \nBoth trainings (virtual and one in-person) are required to participate in surveys. \nSurvey Season – April through June. Two survey dates are required (two surveys per day on two different dates) sign-ups will occur during the virtual training. Surveys typically take 30-45 minutes to complete. Surveys are to be completed within two hours of sunrise.  \nHow to prepare: \nVolunteers must have a minimum of intermediate bird identification skills. You should feel comfortable identifying most of the birds you will encounter on Powell Butte. If you’re not confident in your bird ID skills but still want to be involved\, come to the online orientation! We may be able to pair you with a more experienced birder. \nVolunteers must provide their own binoculars. We have a very limited number available to borrow for the season. If you need to borrow binoculars please email sara@jcwc.org.  \nVolunteers need an eBird account and should have eBird downloaded and set up on their phones. All data collection will take place using the eBird app. \nDue to Portland Parks & Recreation policies a background check and volunteer application is required to participate in these surveys. Those forms will be sent to you after registration. If you have questions please contact sara@jcwc.org.  \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. SUMMARY:2025 Dragonfly Survey
DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \n  \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhen: Orientation –  May 31st\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \nSurvey Season – Weekends from June to October. Surveys are self scheduled with your survey group. \n  \nWhere: Indoor training – Gresham Council Chambers (see directions below)  \nOutdoor training – Tegart Lane pond\, corner of SW Brixton Ave and SW 43rd St in Gresham\, more directions will be provided at the indoor training.  \nSurvey Season – surveys will take place at 3 stormwater ponds in SW Gresham and Brookside Wetlands in Portland  \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 6 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 3-4 surveys (about once a month) during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours (between 6-8 hours total survey time) \n  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle\, a snack\, and LUNCH. There are some spots to grab a quick lunch in Gresham if you want to eat out! \n  \nWe will provide: We will provide nets and guide books\, but you are welcome to bring your own net\, guide\, binoculars\, and good camera. SUMMARY:2025 Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:This event is full and registration is closed!\nJohnson Creek is the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \nThe surveys are designed for all levels of mobility through in stream\, bank\, and stationary surveys. In stream surveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests. Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. You will be surveying with a team so feel free to sign-up your own or we’ll team you up with other surveyors! \nThese surveys are in high demand please email sara@jcwc.org if you can no longer participate.  \nWhen: Orientation – Saturday\, October 18th\, 10am-1:30pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel.  \n  \nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct 2-3 surveys from mid-October to mid-November \n  \nWhere: Zoom Orientation – October 18th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration \n  \nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – October 18th\, 12:30pm-1:30pm\, Johnson Creek Park (address emailed after orientation)  \n  \nSurvey Season: Surveys this year will take place ONLY in Crystal Springs in inner SE Portland.  \n  \nBoth indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 3.5 hours \n  \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 2-3 surveys.
