DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Tideman Johnson Park and the Johnson Creek Watershed Council for a morning of stewardship and habitat enhancement! Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \nRSVP HERE!\nWhen: Saturday\, June 3rd\,  9am-12pm(first Saturday of the month). Stay afterwards to enjoy the end of the season BBQ! \nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat we provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. Walk east on the Trail for a little under a mile to reach the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \nBy bike: follow the Springwater Corridor Trail to the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \nBy car: park near the intersection of 37th and Tenino Streets (please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways or mailboxes). DESCRIPTION:Join us with our partners at Depave to remove 1\,500 square feet of impermeable asphalt from the parking lot at Stonebridge apartments\, who regularly have trouble with flooding on their lot. Our partners at Depave will train everyone on the best way to safely remove pavement for the day! No experience necessary! \nPre-registration is required\, we expect this event to fill quickly! \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\nWhat: Removing 1\,500 sq ft of asphalt from the parking lot to help reduce flooding during the winter.  \nWhen: Saturday\, April 8th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm \nWhere: Stonebridge Apartments\, 7733 SE 92nd Ave\, Portland\, OR 97266. Park at the Saint Mary’s Ethiopian Orthodox Church and walk next door to the Stonebridge Apartments. \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. For nearly 50 years\, local residents have dedicated their time and energy to restore\, repair\, and clean Johnson Creek. DESCRIPTION:Errol Heights Park is being re-imagined! Construction is currently happening\, and the goal is that sometime late next year we will be able to enjoy the new amenities of the Park: ADA-accessible trails\, nature play area\, Portland “loo” (bathroom)\, picnic tables\, basketball court\, and more! Check it out: Errol Heights Park Project | Portland.gov. In the meantime\, staff\, volunteers and members of the public are not allowed in the Park because of construction zone safety concerns. SUMMARY:Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek is the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \nSurveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests. Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. SUMMARY:The Annual Johnson Creek Big Clean-up
DESCRIPTION:We are currently experiencing technical difficulties with our registration system. You may receive an error message after you submit your registration form. Don’t worry! You ARE registered and all set to participate in the Clean-Up. We apologize for the confusion.\nThe Johnson Creek Clean-Up IS HERE! This is our wettest wildest\, dirtiest\, sweatiest\, and FUNNEST stewardship event of the year. Since 2007\, volunteers like you have jumped into Johnson Creek and pulled out 65 tons of trash from the water. That’s right: 65 tons! This is a unique opportunity to actually get in the creek and remove litter from where it matters the most. You won’t want to miss it! \nArrive at your site at 9:00 am to meet your team and Creek Captain and learn how to be safe in the water. Spend ~3 hours in the creek picking up trash\, then travel to Mill Park in Milwaukie for a delicious burrito lunch at 12 noon. \n\nWhat: Remove trash from Johnson Creek! Get in the water or stay on land and help remove tons of trash from in and around the creek. Stick around afterward for FREE lunch and community bonding. \nWhen: Saturday\, August 20th\, from 9:00 am – 12 noon (updated start time!)\, followed by FREE lunch \nWhere: About a dozen sites throughout the watershed! See site descriptions below. Detailed directions to your site will be emailed to you before the event. Lunch will be at Mill Park (6201 SE Overland St.) in Milwaukie. \nHow to register: Registration is open now!! \n1. Carefully read the site descriptions below. Each site is different and some are more physically challenging than others. \n2. Pick the site at which you want to volunteer. \n3. Register for ONLY the specific site at which you will volunteer. \n4. If you are coming as part of a group\, each person in your group needs to register separately. \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy. You will be walking in the creek in your shoes. We recommend light-weight shoes like sneakers\, running shoes\, or breathable hiking boots that will drain easily\, rather than heavy boots that will stay water-logged. SUMMARY:Beaver Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Beaver Surveys are back!! We are looking for the next Community Science superstars for the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Beaver Surveys! \nFor one survey day\, your team of 2-3 volunteers will walk a 1-mile long reach of the creek to map and collect data on beaver dams and other signs of beaver activity. For more information\, check out our Beavers Surveyors page as well as our “Beavers in Johnson Creek” Story Map for a tour of the beaver dams found in 2016! \nREGISTER HERE!\nHow to get involved:  \nCome to the virtual and outdoor trainings on August 13th (both are required). \nVirtual training over Zoom from 10am-11am.  \nOutdoor training at Tideman Johnson City Park 12pm-2pm. SE 37th Avenue and Tenino Street\, Portland\, OR 97202. \nSign-up for one\, three hour survey on one of four weekends/days\, August 27th/28th\, August 31st\, Septmeber 3rd/4th\, or September 10th/11th.   \nREGISTER HERE!\nRequirements: \nNo experience necessary!  \nThese surveys are not suitable for children under 16 years old. \nVolunteers should anticipate walking for one mile over rough/uneven terrain on streambanks and/or in the water while in warm to hot weather conditions. \nFor these surveys\, we will be providing waders and other safety equipment. We will be using a web-based and mobile platform called Anecdata to collect the beaver data! If you have a smartphone\, please download the app and create an account.
