SUMMARY:Dragonfly Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \n  \nHow to get involved:  \n  \n\nCome to the indoor training (REQUIRED) on Saturday June 11th from 9am-12noon at Gresham Council Chambers. There is a virtual option available for those not comfortable being indoors with unmasked people. \n\n  \n\nCome to the outdoor training (REQUIRED) on Saturday June11th from 1pm-4pm at Tegart Lane Pond Gresham\n\n  \n\nSign up for at least four surveys between June 18th and October 8th. Surveys occur every two weeks. \n\n  \nAnyone under 16 must be accompanied by an attentive adult!  \n  \nREGISTER HERE!\n  \nRequirements: \n  \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! \n  \nSurveys require some walking on uneven terrain in warm weather. Volunteers must be sure-footed and willing to handle live insects\, including the use of nets to catch and identify species.  \n  \nAll data collection will take place using the iNaturalist app.  \n  \nVolunteers need an iNaturalist account and should have iNaturalist downloaded and set-up on their phones.  \n  \nVolunteers are welcome to bring their own binoculars\, nets\, field guides\, and a good camera (but not required). We will provide nets to those that do not have one.  \n  \nTime Commitment: \n6 hours of training with a lunch break between the indoor and outdoor sessions.  \n  \nA commitment of approximately four surveys (one per month) from June through September is required. Surveys take approximately two hours\, not including travel time. We will cover more detail in the orientation.
