SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n  \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n  \nRSVP HERE!\n  \nWhat: Invasive species removal\, grubbing\, and weeding. \n  \nWhen: Wednesday\, July 13th\, 2022\, 9am-12pm \n  \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \n  \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n  \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. \n  \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds.  \n  \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event \n  \nRSVP HERE!\n  \nDirections to site:  \nBy transit: Take route #73 or #10 to SE Foster & 122nd. Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \n  \nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \n  \nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, June 25th from 9am – 11am for a FREE guided birdwatching walk along the Gresham-Fairview Trail! Learn the basics of birdwatching and how to identify some common feathered friends by sight and sound. If you’ve always wanted to know more about the birds you see in your backyard but didn’t know where to start\, start here! This is a casual and welcoming walk for everyone who thinks birds are beautiful but doesn’t think of themselves as a birder. \nPlease REGISTER HERE. Each person coming with you (including youth) should register separately. \n\nWhen: Saturday\, June 25th from 9am – 11am \nWhere: Gresham-Fairview Trail\, Gresham (directions below) \nWhat to do & bring: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! We will walk a little over 2 miles (round-trip) on a paved but sometimes steep trail. Wear sturdy shoes. We have a limited number of binoculars and bird guides available to share.  Bring binoculars and a bird guide if you have them\, but don’t worry if you don’t! Children are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult. \nDirections: We will meet at Linnemann Station Park in Gresham. \nBy transit: Bus #9 (Gresham TC/Portland) to W Powell & Powell Loop. SUMMARY:Bioswale Beautification at Saint Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Church
DESCRIPTION:What: Clearing vegetation from 1242 sq. feet of a bioswale in the parking lot. We like to do this in the summer to make sure it’s cleared and draining properly when the rains come in the fall. DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \n  \nHow to get involved:  \n  \n\nCome to the indoor training (REQUIRED) on Saturday June 11th from 9am-12noon at Gresham Council Chambers. There is a virtual option available for those not comfortable being indoors with unmasked people. \n\n  \n\nCome to the outdoor training (REQUIRED) on Saturday June11th from 1pm-4pm at Tegart Lane Pond Gresham\n\n  \n\nSign up for at least four surveys between June 18th and October 8th. Surveys occur every two weeks. \n\n  \nAnyone under 16 must be accompanied by an attentive adult!  \n  \nREGISTER HERE!\n  \nRequirements: \n  \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! \n  \nSurveys require some walking on uneven terrain in warm weather. Volunteers must be sure-footed and willing to handle live insects\, including the use of nets to catch and identify species.  \n  \nAll data collection will take place using the iNaturalist app.  \n  \nVolunteers need an iNaturalist account and should have iNaturalist downloaded and set-up on their phones.  \n  \nVolunteers are welcome to bring their own binoculars\, nets\, field guides\, and a good camera (but not required). We will provide nets to those that do not have one.  \n  \nTime Commitment: \n6 hours of training with a lunch break between the indoor and outdoor sessions.  \n  \nA commitment of approximately four surveys (one per month) from June through September is required. Surveys take approximately two hours\, not including travel time. We will cover more detail in the orientation.
