If you can no longer attend please email Marlee@jcwc.org and let them know.  \nRSVP REQUIRED – click here to RSVP\n  \nWhat: Join us for a screening of the Follow The Water documentary.  \nThe series is an exploration of our collective connection\, disconnection and reconnection to our waters told through an indigenous lens including historical\, sociological and scientific perspectives. We uncover the ripple effect of being physically and spiritually disconnected from our waters\, and what we can learn from the original keepers of our waters. Produced by MetroEast Community media in for the Clean Rivers Coalition in association with the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. \nWe will also have a free buffet style dinner\, volunteer awards\, raffle prizes\, and a fun community bonding activity.  \nWhen: Thursday\, November 13th\, 6:00-8:00pm  \nWhere: Parish Hall at All Saints Episcopal Church (4033 SE Woodstock Blvd). DESCRIPTION:Gather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! Walk east on the Trail for a little under a mile to reach the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy bike: follow the Springwater Corridor Trail to the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy car: park near the intersection of 37th and Tenino Streets (please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways or mailboxes). DESCRIPTION:This year’s symposium highlights the latest research and restoration projects shaping Johnson Creek and its surrounding ecosystems. From amphibian field guides to floodplain and wetland restoration\, long-term data analysis\, and the Confluence Project\, presenters will share discoveries that reveal how our watershed is changing—and what that means for the future. \nCome learn from local scientists\, graduate students\, and practitioners working to better understand and restore the health of Johnson Creek. \n  \nTo see the full line-up of speakers and purchase tickets\, click here!\n  \nWhat: Johnson Creek Science Symposium. Tickets $10. \nWhen: Tuesday\, October 21st\, 1pm-5pm. The program starts promptly at 1pm. If you arrive after 1pm you will be let in during a break in programming. SUMMARY:2025 Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:This event is full and registration is closed!\nJohnson Creek is the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \nThe surveys are designed for all levels of mobility through in stream\, bank\, and stationary surveys. In stream surveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests. Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. You will be surveying with a team so feel free to sign-up your own or we’ll team you up with other surveyors! \nThese surveys are in high demand please email sara@jcwc.org if you can no longer participate.  \nWhen: Orientation – Saturday\, October 18th\, 10am-1:30pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel.  \n  \nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct 2-3 surveys from mid-October to mid-November \n  \nWhere: Zoom Orientation – October 18th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration \n  \nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – October 18th\, 12:30pm-1:30pm\, Johnson Creek Park (address emailed after orientation)  \n  \nSurvey Season: Surveys this year will take place ONLY in Crystal Springs in inner SE Portland.  \n  \nBoth indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 3.5 hours \n  \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 2-3 surveys. Surveys typically take 2-3 hours.  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. \nWe will provide: We will provide all necessary training and gear. You are welcome to bring your own waders\, life jacket\, and walking stick. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Surveys require wading through Johnson Creek in water levels that can vary between ankle deep to waist deep and potentially climbing over/under downed logs. DESCRIPTION:The Johnson Creek Clean-Up returns August 16th\, 2025! This is your chance to GET IN the creek and GET OUT all the trash that has accumulated over the past year. Since 2007\, volunteers like you have jumped into Johnson Creek and pulled out over 70 tons of trash from the water. Yes that’s right\, over 70 tons! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to get in the creek and remove litter from where it matters the most. See you there!  \nArrive at your site at 8:45 am to meet your team and Creek Captain and learn how to be safe in the water. Spend ~3 hours in the creek picking up trash\, then travel to Johnson Creek Park to have lunch at 12 noon. \nInterested in submitting art to be on this year’s clean-up t-shirts? Click here for more information! \n\nWhat: Remove trash from Johnson Creek! Get in the water or stay on land and help remove tons of trash from in and around the creek. DESCRIPTION:Join JCWC and Leach Botanical Garden staffers and volunteers on a PETALpalooza ride from Mt. Tabor Community Garden to Leach Botanical Garden! \n Shift2Bikes lists more details about this ride and all other Pedalpalooza rides over the summer. \n What: ~8 mile bike ride from Mt. Tabor Community Garden to Leach Botanical Garden. Some small hills\, nothing too gnarly. This is a casual-paced ride and not a race. This is also a no drop ride. All event participants receive free admission to Leach for the evening! Option to picnic and enjoy live experimental music at Leach. Ride leaders will lead an unofficial ride back to Mt. Tabor.  \n When: Sunday\, July 20th 2025. Meet at 3:30 PM. Ride leaves at 4:00 PM SHARP. We expect to arrive at Leach around 5/5:30 PM. \n Where: Meet at Mt Tabor community garden grassy area (45.50835\, -122.6010) \nWhat to bring and wear: Bike helmet\, bike lock\, bike lights\, snacks\, picnic blanket and picnic food. It will be hot so bring warm-weather items such as a filled water bottle\, electrolyte powder/ drinks\, sunhat\, sunscreen and sunglasses. Dress for warm weather. \nWhat we provide: We will provide ride leaders and volunteer corkers. Light snacks provided. \nThe ride back from Leach to Mt. Tabor: The official ride ends once we arrive at Leach. There will be an unofficial return ride from Leach to Mt. Tabor. The way back will be more casual\, if you want us to keep an eye out for you please let a ride leader know. \nBathrooms: We’ll take a pit stop on the way somewhere with bathrooms. Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, June 7th\,  9:30 am-12:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \n\n\n\nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site. \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds.We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. SUMMARY:2025 Dragonfly Survey
DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \n  \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhen: Orientation –  May 31st\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \nSurvey Season – Weekends from June to October. Surveys are self scheduled with your survey group. \n  \nWhere: Indoor training – Gresham Council Chambers (see directions below)  \nOutdoor training – Tegart Lane pond\, corner of SW Brixton Ave and SW 43rd St in Gresham\, more directions will be provided at the indoor training.  \nSurvey Season – surveys will take place at 3 stormwater ponds in SW Gresham and Brookside Wetlands in Portland  \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 6 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 3-4 surveys (about once a month) during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours (between 6-8 hours total survey time) \n  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle\, a snack\, and LUNCH. There are some spots to grab a quick lunch in Gresham if you want to eat out! \n  \nWe will provide: We will provide nets and guide books\, but you are welcome to bring your own net\, guide\, binoculars\, and good camera. Anyone under the age of 16 is required to be accompanied by an attentive adult.  \n  \nAccessibility: These surveys require walking/standing/squatting for up to two hours in 65-80 degree weather. Surveys take place on the banks of ponds that may be steep and slippery\, surveyors must have solid footing. Volunteers must be willing to handle live insects\, including the use of nets to catch and identify species.  \n  \nBefore the training please download and sign up for iNaturalist App on your mobile device. This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden!
