On this tour you will get insight into the process of restoring habitat in the riparian area including site selection\, plant selection\, and invasive removal techniques. You will also learn about the impact that restoration has on fish passage\, erosion control\, and how we are working with beavers! \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\nWhat: Biking tour along the Springwater Trail of habitat restoration sites in the Johnson Creek Watershed.  \nWhen: Tuesday\, September 12th\, 2023 from 5:30pm-7:30pm \nWhere: Meet at Westmoreland Park (directions emailed to you after registration)\, bike to Tideman Johnson Natural Area and Errol Heights. The ride is 2.5 miles one-way from Westmoreland Park to Errol Heights.  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n  \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhat: Invasive species removal\, grubbing\, and weeding. \n  \nWhen: Wednesday\, February 8th\, 2023\, 9am-12pm \n  \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \n  \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n  \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! DESCRIPTION:Join the Crystal Springs Partnership for a walk along the creek from bottom to top\, highlighting past\, present\, and future enhancements and restoration of Crystal Springs Creek. It has been the better part of a decade since we hosted a walking tour\, and a lot has happened since then! Our walk will include stops at the confluence with Johnson Creek\, the Brannen Natural Area site\, Westmoreland Park\, followed by a peek at the creek as it passes Westmoreland Union Manor and the Eastmoreland Golf Course. SUMMARY:Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek and it’s tributaries are the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \nSurveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests (redds). Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. You will be surveying with a team so feel free to sign-up your own or we’ll team you up with other surveyors! \nClick Here to RSVP!\n  \nWhen: Orientation – Saturday\, October 14th\, 10am-1:30pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel.  \nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct 2-3 surveys from mid-October to mid-November \nWhere: Zoom Orientation – October 14th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration \nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – October 14th\, 12:30pm-1:30pm\, Johnson Creek Park (address emailed after orientation)  \nSurvey Season: Surveys this year will take place ONLY in Crystal Springs in inner SE Portland.  \n  \nBoth indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate! These surveys are in high demand please email marlee@jcwc.org if you can no longer participate. \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 3.5 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 2-3 surveys. Surveys typically take 2-3 hours.  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. SUMMARY:Depave Event at Trinity Lutheran Church
DESCRIPTION:Join us with our partners at Depave to remove impermeable asphalt from the parking lot at the Trinity Lutheran Church. In the spring\, we will return to the site to plant rain gardens in replacement of the pavement. This project will reduce the water that flows from the City storm drains and into Johnson Creek\, helping to reduce pollution\, oil and trash from entering the creek. Our partners at Depave will train everyone on the best way to safely remove pavement for the day! DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. \nFind out what we have been up to on the Leach Back Five Website. \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. To honor his legacy\, we will be fundraising for BIPOC led organizations working for racial justice and leading a habitat enhancement event at Powell Butte.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe know that groups and individuals often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day\, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. If you would like to participate\, we encourage everyone to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice. We recognize that people have different abilities to donate. Youth 10 years old and older are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility: These surveys require wading in ponds and mud that ranges from ankle deep to waist deep. During the training we will review the relative difficulty of each survey site which you may take into consideration when choosing which site you would like to survey. In general surveyors should be sure-footed and able to walk and stand for up to 2 hours. If you sign-up solo we will assign you a survey group. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf I want to sign-up with another person do they also have to register? Yes\, everyone in your group should register so we have an accurate count of surveyors and can make sure everyone gets gear. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow many hours do I need to volunteer? Including training\, about 5 to 8 hours depending on drive distance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCan children volunteer? Most sites are relatively shallow\, but are best for kids 10 and up. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow are monitoring sites assigned? There are about 12-15 sites that we hope to monitor around the Gresham/Fairview area. Site locations and descriptions are presented at the training and people can select first\, second\, third choice or no preference and we will match everyone by preference as best we can. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA huge thank you to the City of Gresham for helping to organize this event and to our generous funders that make the volunteer program possible.
