DESCRIPTION:Nothing says “Pacific Northwest” like the annual return from the ocean of salmon\, fighting upstream to spawn and die in the rivers of their birth. In October\, witness this ancient\, iconic phenomenon at Oxbow Regional Park along the Sandy River\, one of the nation’s designated Wild and Scenic Rivers. During the annual Salmon Homecoming\, naturalists are on hand at Oxbow to help you see the salmon and explore other aspects of this 1\,000-acre wilderness of old growth forest\, hiking and equestrian trails and river beaches. \n\nAll Salmon Homecoming events are free; registration is not required. $5 per vehicle ($7 per bus) fee. For more information\, call 503-663-0238. \n\nView salmon\n11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\nJoin naturalists at the river’s edge; they’ll help you spot spawning salmon and tell you about the salmon’s behavior and life cycle. Borrow a pair of polarized fish-viewing glasses onsite. The trail to salmon viewing is unpaved and fairly level. Suitable for all ages. \n \nIdentify mushrooms\n2 to 4 p.m. \nExplore the incredible diversity of fungi in Oxbow’s ancient forest. In this hands-on\, beginners class\, learn the basics of mushrooms and other fungi. Suitable for ages 12 and older. Meet at Alder Shelter (group picnic area A) at 1:45 p.m.

SUMMARY:Prepare Errol Heights for Future Native Planting
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will be mulching a site slated to be planted this winter. They will also be removing invasive species from a former volunteer-planted area\, and will install several signs. No experience necessary! Wear sturdy shoes\, long pants and shirts\, and bring rain gear\, a hat and water bottle. Instruction\, tools\, gloves and small treats will be provided. Volunteers must be at least age 16 (without adult supervision) and younger children must be accompanied by adults. Volunteers under age 18 must have a parent sign the PP&R liability form before the child is allowed  to participate. \n  \n  \n \nThis event is part of Parke Diem\, a citywide work party weekend for Portland`s parks and natural areas. Register on the Parke Diem website and get a free t-shirt! This is a joint restoration event led by Portland Parks and Recreation\, City Nature East in partnership with Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, Friends of Errol Heights and Friends of Tideman Johnson. DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will walk in Johnson Creek to remove trash from designated stream segments. Each stream segment will have a Team Captain who will help guide activities. Participants will need to bring a water bottle and wear shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting wet and dirty. Although some teams will stay dry removing litter from various park grounds nearby. \nFollowing the event all volunteers are welcome to join a celebratory BBQ at Mill Park as well. \nSee selected stream sections and maps here. \nSix volunteers are need from 1pm-5pm to help with trash collection as well.
