SUMMARY:Wildlife Walk for the Queer & Trans Community
DESCRIPTION:Join Marlee (they/them) for a slow\, meandering walk and hang at Powell Butte Natural Area. Recently we have seen deer\, coyotes\, kestrels\, lazuli buntings\, and many more! The goal of this event is to see some sick wildlife\, but also have time to connect and chat with each other 🙂  \nThis is the first of what will hopefully be many wildlife walks for the Queer and Trans community. Thank you for being part of the pilot! \nThis event is only for individuals that identify as part of the LGBTQIA2S+ (or Queer) community.  Allies we love you\, but this event is not for you.  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhat: Wildlife Walk for the Queer & Trans Community. A super chill\, very slow walk through Powell Butte Natural Area.  \nWhen: 9:00am-11am\, Saturday\, August 2nd\, 2025  \nWhere: Powell Butte Natural Area (directions will be emailed after registering) \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring your own binoculars\, field guides\, or anything else you like on a nice walk.  \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! We will be staying on the trails\, but sturdy\, close-toed shoes are recommended. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. \nWhat we will provide: Snacks\, field guides\, some binoculars. We can also provide bus fare to the event. SUMMARY:PETALpalooza Ride from Mt. Tabor to Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join JCWC and Leach Botanical Garden staffers and volunteers on a PETALpalooza ride from Mt. Tabor Community Garden to Leach Botanical Garden! \n Shift2Bikes lists more details about this ride and all other Pedalpalooza rides over the summer. \n What: ~8 mile bike ride from Mt. Tabor Community Garden to Leach Botanical Garden. Some small hills\, nothing too gnarly. This is a casual-paced ride and not a race. This is also a no drop ride. All event participants receive free admission to Leach for the evening! Option to picnic and enjoy live experimental music at Leach. Ride leaders will lead an unofficial ride back to Mt. Tabor.  \n When: Sunday\, July 20th 2025. Meet at 3:30 PM. Ride leaves at 4:00 PM SHARP. We expect to arrive at Leach around 5/5:30 PM. \n Where: Meet at Mt Tabor community garden grassy area (45.50835\, -122.6010) \nWhat to bring and wear: Bike helmet\, bike lock\, bike lights\, snacks\, picnic blanket and picnic food. It will be hot so bring warm-weather items such as a filled water bottle\, electrolyte powder/ drinks\, sunhat\, sunscreen and sunglasses. Dress for warm weather. \nWhat we provide: We will provide ride leaders and volunteer corkers. Light snacks provided. \nThe ride back from Leach to Mt. Tabor: The official ride ends once we arrive at Leach. There will be an unofficial return ride from Leach to Mt. Tabor. The way back will be more casual\, if you want us to keep an eye out for you please let a ride leader know. \nBathrooms: We’ll take a pit stop on the way somewhere with bathrooms. There are bathrooms at Leach\, too. \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \nChildren are welcome: Children must be accompanied by an attentive adult. We are working to revegetate areas that were disturbed during construction. DESCRIPTION:Gather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \n\n\n\nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \n\n\n\nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, June 7th\,  9:30 am-12:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \n\n\n\nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site. \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! Walk east on the Trail for a little under a mile to reach the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy bike: follow the Springwater Corridor Trail to the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy car: park near the intersection of 37th and Tenino Streets (please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways or mailboxes). SUMMARY:2025 Dragonfly Survey
DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \n  \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhen: Orientation –  May 31st\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \nSurvey Season – Weekends from June to October. Surveys are self scheduled with your survey group. \n  \nWhere: Indoor training – Gresham Council Chambers (see directions below)  \nOutdoor training – Tegart Lane pond\, corner of SW Brixton Ave and SW 43rd St in Gresham\, more directions will be provided at the indoor training.  \nSurvey Season – surveys will take place at 3 stormwater ponds in SW Gresham and Brookside Wetlands in Portland  \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 6 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 3-4 surveys (about once a month) during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours (between 6-8 hours total survey time) \n  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle\, a snack\, and LUNCH. There are some spots to grab a quick lunch in Gresham if you want to eat out! \n  \nWe will provide: We will provide nets and guide books\, but you are welcome to bring your own net\, guide\, binoculars\, and good camera. This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! Soil consultant Maria Loper will present on soil biology\, compost and give participants the chance to take a look at their soil samples under a microscope and discuss what’s present\, what’s not\, and how to improve our soils together. If there’s extra time\, Maria will also demonstrate how to create your own simple and easy vermiculture (worm) bin. This event is bilingual in Spanish and English. \nMaria Loper is an advocate for reshaping our relationship with soil\, water\, and nature. Maria leads efforts to transition growers to regenerative agriculture practices. By emphasizing the importance of diverse microorganisms in living soil\, she helps create nutrient-dense food\, soil that can retain moisture\, healthier ecosystems\, and mineral-balanced soils that support plant health and resilience. The Prairie-Nesting Bird surveys are a community science project started in 2019 to monitor grassland birds breeding in Powell Butte Nature Park. It’s a joint project between the Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, Portland Parks and Recreation\, Conservation InSight\, and amazing community scientists like you! \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \nWhat: Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys \n  \nWhen & Where: Virtual AND in-person training sessions required \nVirtual orientation (REQUIRED) on Wednesday\, April 2nd from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm  \nOne in-person training (REQUIRED) at Powell Butte Nature Park. You can sign-up for an outdoor training session after registration. Check your email! \nFriday\, April 4th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am OR \nSaturday\, April 5th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am \nBoth trainings (virtual and one in-person) are required to participate in surveys. \nSurvey Season – April through June. Two survey dates are required (two surveys per day on two different dates) sign-ups will occur during the virtual training. Surveys typically take 30-45 minutes to complete. Surveys are to be completed within two hours of sunrise.  \nHow to prepare: \nVolunteers must have a minimum of intermediate bird identification skills. You should feel comfortable identifying most of the birds you will encounter on Powell Butte. If you’re not confident in your bird ID skills but still want to be involved\, come to the online orientation! We may be able to pair you with a more experienced birder. \nVolunteers must provide their own binoculars. We have a very limited number available to borrow for the season. If you need to borrow binoculars please email sara@jcwc.org.  \nVolunteers need an eBird account and should have eBird downloaded and set up on their phones. All data collection will take place using the eBird app. \nDue to Portland Parks & Recreation policies a background check and volunteer application is required to participate in these surveys. Those forms will be sent to you after registration. If you have questions please contact sara@jcwc.org.  \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. DESCRIPTION:Sign-up today for Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s most unified restoration event of the year! The Watershed Wide Event is happening Saturday\, March 1st from 8:45am -12noon. We will spread out at 8 simultaneous work parties throughout the watershed. Stick around at the end for a free lunch! \nJohnson Creek is a unique waterway\, providing home and habitat to lots of special wildlife and a lot of human communities. This event is a great time to come together and care for the creek and watershed as we weed\, plant and mulch helping to restore a healthier watershed.  For nearly 50 years\, local residents have dedicated their time and energy to restore\, repair\, and clean Johnson Creek. We are proud to have been part of this legacy for the past 29 years. Be a part of the legacy!  \nRSVP IS REQUIRED. Site choices are below. Click on the name of the site you would like to volunteer at and fill out the waiver to register.  \nWant to register a group?
