Join JCWC and PP&R at Powell Butte for a presentation by Susan Hawes on PNW Native Plants – Plant ID\, Where you can find them\, and Will they grow in your yard?\, followed by a short 1.5 mile hike at Powell Butte. An interpreter is provided\, along with visual guides. This event has limited spots with priority given to members of the Deaf Community and their family. Soil consultant Maria Loper will present on soil biology\, compost and give participants the chance to take a look at their soil samples under a microscope and discuss what’s present\, what’s not\, and how to improve our soils together. If there’s extra time\, Maria will also demonstrate how to create your own simple and easy vermiculture (worm) bin. This event is bilingual in Spanish and English. \nMaria Loper is an advocate for reshaping our relationship with soil\, water\, and nature. Maria leads efforts to transition growers to regenerative agriculture practices. By emphasizing the importance of diverse microorganisms in living soil\, she helps create nutrient-dense food\, soil that can retain moisture\, healthier ecosystems\, and mineral-balanced soils that support plant health and resilience. DESCRIPTION:Gather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \n\n\n\nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. SUMMARY:Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys
DESCRIPTION:Calling all birders! Join our 2025 Prairie-Nesting Birds survey team! The Prairie-Nesting Bird surveys are a community science project started in 2019 to monitor grassland birds breeding in Powell Butte Nature Park. It’s a joint project between the Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, Portland Parks and Recreation\, Conservation InSight\, and amazing community scientists like you! \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \nWhat: Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys \n  \nWhen & Where: Virtual AND in-person training sessions required \nVirtual orientation (REQUIRED) on Wednesday\, April 2nd from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm  \nOne in-person training (REQUIRED) at Powell Butte Nature Park. You can sign-up for an outdoor training session after registration. Check your email! \nFriday\, April 4th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am OR \nSaturday\, April 5th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am \nBoth trainings (virtual and one in-person) are required to participate in surveys. \nSurvey Season – April through June. Two survey dates are required (two surveys per day on two different dates) sign-ups will occur during the virtual training. Surveys typically take 30-45 minutes to complete. Surveys are to be completed within two hours of sunrise.  \nHow to prepare: \nVolunteers must have a minimum of intermediate bird identification skills. You should feel comfortable identifying most of the birds you will encounter on Powell Butte. If you’re not confident in your bird ID skills but still want to be involved\, come to the online orientation! We may be able to pair you with a more experienced birder. \nVolunteers must provide their own binoculars. We have a very limited number available to borrow for the season. If you need to borrow binoculars please email sara@jcwc.org.  \nVolunteers need an eBird account and should have eBird downloaded and set up on their phones. All data collection will take place using the eBird app. \nDue to Portland Parks & Recreation policies a background check and volunteer application is required to participate in these surveys. Those forms will be sent to you after registration. If you have questions please contact sara@jcwc.org.  \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. DESCRIPTION:Sign-up today for Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s most unified restoration event of the year! The Watershed Wide Event is happening Saturday\, March 1st from 8:45am -12noon. We will spread out at 8 simultaneous work parties throughout the watershed. Stick around at the end for a free lunch! \nJohnson Creek is a unique waterway\, providing home and habitat to lots of special wildlife and a lot of human communities. This event is a great time to come together and care for the creek and watershed as we weed\, plant and mulch helping to restore a healthier watershed.  For nearly 50 years\, local residents have dedicated their time and energy to restore\, repair\, and clean Johnson Creek. We are proud to have been part of this legacy for the past 29 years. Be a part of the legacy!  \nRSVP IS REQUIRED. Site choices are below. Click on the name of the site you would like to volunteer at and fill out the waiver to register.  \nWant to register a group? To honor his legacy\, we will be fundraising for BIPOC led organizations working for racial justice and leading a land tending event at Powell Butte.  \nWe know that groups and individuals often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day\, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. If you would like to participate\, we encourage everyone to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice.  \nNot sure who to support? This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement with Crystal Springs Partnership at Brannen Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Crystal Springs is home to coho and Chinook salmon\, and steelhead trout. All three species are listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Ace\, and Crystal Springs is designated as critical habitat. Join the Crystal Springs Partnership in continuing their dedication to creating healthy salmon habitat in the creek! \n\n\n\nClick here to RSVP \n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, December 15th\, 9:00am-12:00pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Brannen Natural Area. The corner of SE 21st. Ave. and SE Umatilla St.  \n\n\n\nWhat: Invasive species removal and livestaking native shrubs. May do some trash pick-up. \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Tools\, gloves\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. Refreshments. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact info@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n\n\n\nChildren 14 years and older are permitted.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event may require standing or squatting/kneeling for long periods of time\, walking over uneven ground\, bending and lifting heavy objects. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership.
