DESCRIPTION:The Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! SUMMARY:Science in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of fun scientific exploration in the park. This year we are learning about what is in the Johnson Creek Watershed! We’ll have interactive stations about salmon\, insects and more! This event is great for elementary and pre-k age kids to discover what kinds of things contribute to a healthy watershed. \nParticipants will learn about First Foods\, participate in a salmon lifecycle obstacle course\, observe macroinvertebrates\, build a pinecone birdfeeder and create colorful craft dragonflies. \nWe’re also teaming up with SOLVE for a morning clean up from 9am-11am! \nRSVP not required\, but encouraged. RSVP here!\nWhen: Saturday\, September 27th\, 10:00am-12:00pm. Can you believe we are headed into our tenth year of surveys! \nJoin teams of 3-4 volunteers on a survey by walking a 1-mile long reach of the creek to map and collect data on beaver dams and other signs of beaver activity on Saturday\, September 6th! All surveys will happen on the same day – your team sets the time. \nNo experience or gear necessary\, all instructions and gear will be provided at orientation and on the survey day! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \nClick here to RSVP!\nWhen: Orientation – September 3rd\, 6-7:30pm over Zoom \nNew this year! DESCRIPTION:The Johnson Creek Clean-Up returns August 16th\, 2025! This is your chance to GET IN the creek and GET OUT all the trash that has accumulated over the past year. Since 2007\, volunteers like you have jumped into Johnson Creek and pulled out over 70 tons of trash from the water. Yes that’s right\, over 70 tons! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to get in the creek and remove litter from where it matters the most. See you there!  \nArrive at your site at 8:45 am to meet your team and Creek Captain and learn how to be safe in the water. Spend ~3 hours in the creek picking up trash\, then travel to Johnson Creek Park to have lunch at 12 noon. \nInterested in submitting art to be on this year’s clean-up t-shirts? Click here for more information! \n\nWhat: Remove trash from Johnson Creek! Get in the water or stay on land and help remove tons of trash from in and around the creek. The goal of this event is to see some sick wildlife\, but also have time to connect and chat with each other 🙂  \nThis is the first of what will hopefully be many wildlife walks for the Queer and Trans community. DESCRIPTION:Join JCWC and Leach Botanical Garden staffers and volunteers on a PETALpalooza ride from Mt. Tabor Community Garden to Leach Botanical Garden! \n Shift2Bikes lists more details about this ride and all other Pedalpalooza rides over the summer. \n What: ~8 mile bike ride from Mt. Tabor Community Garden to Leach Botanical Garden. Some small hills\, nothing too gnarly. This is a casual-paced ride and not a race. This is also a no drop ride. All event participants receive free admission to Leach for the evening! Option to picnic and enjoy live experimental music at Leach. Ride leaders will lead an unofficial ride back to Mt. Tabor.  \n When: Sunday\, July 20th 2025. Meet at 3:30 PM. Ride leaves at 4:00 PM SHARP. We expect to arrive at Leach around 5/5:30 PM. \n Where: Meet at Mt Tabor community garden grassy area (45.50835\, -122.6010) \nWhat to bring and wear: Bike helmet\, bike lock\, bike lights\, snacks\, picnic blanket and picnic food. It will be hot so bring warm-weather items such as a filled water bottle\, electrolyte powder/ drinks\, sunhat\, sunscreen and sunglasses. Dress for warm weather. \nWhat we provide: We will provide ride leaders and volunteer corkers. Light snacks provided. \nThe ride back from Leach to Mt. Tabor: The official ride ends once we arrive at Leach. There will be an unofficial return ride from Leach to Mt. Tabor. The way back will be more casual\, if you want us to keep an eye out for you please let a ride leader know. \nBathrooms: We’ll take a pit stop on the way somewhere with bathrooms. DESCRIPTION:Gather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. \n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and what plants we’ll remove.  \n\n\n\nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and on uneven terrain which can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event \n\n\n\nDirections to site:  \n\n\n\nBy transit: Take route #73 or #10 to SE Foster & 122nd. Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \n\n\n\nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \n\n\n\nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. SUMMARY:2025 Dragonfly Survey
DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \n  \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhen: Orientation –  May 31st\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \nSurvey Season – Weekends from June to October. Surveys are self scheduled with your survey group. \n  \nWhere: Indoor training – Gresham Council Chambers (see directions below)  \nOutdoor training – Tegart Lane pond\, corner of SW Brixton Ave and SW 43rd St in Gresham\, more directions will be provided at the indoor training.  \nSurvey Season – surveys will take place at 3 stormwater ponds in SW Gresham and Brookside Wetlands in Portland  \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 6 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 3-4 surveys (about once a month) during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours (between 6-8 hours total survey time) \n  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle\, a snack\, and LUNCH. There are some spots to grab a quick lunch in Gresham if you want to eat out! \n  \nWe will provide: We will provide nets and guide books\, but you are welcome to bring your own net\, guide\, binoculars\, and good camera. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact info@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare.  \n  \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Anyone under the age of 16 is required to be accompanied by an attentive adult.  \n  \nAccessibility: These surveys require walking/standing/squatting for up to two hours in 65-80 degree weather. Surveys take place on the banks of ponds that may be steep and slippery\, surveyors must have solid footing. Volunteers must be willing to handle live insects\, including the use of nets to catch and identify species.  \n  \nBefore the training please download and sign up for iNaturalist App on your mobile device. Join Leach Botanical Garden and Johnson Creek Watershed Council for our first ever Soil Party! Soil consultant Maria Loper will present on soil biology\, compost and give participants the chance to take a look at their soil samples under a microscope and discuss what’s present\, what’s not\, and how to improve our soils together. If there’s extra time\, Maria will also demonstrate how to create your own simple and easy vermiculture (worm) bin. This event is bilingual in Spanish and English. \nMaria Loper is an advocate for reshaping our relationship with soil\, water\, and nature. Maria leads efforts to transition growers to regenerative agriculture practices. By emphasizing the importance of diverse microorganisms in living soil\, she helps create nutrient-dense food\, soil that can retain moisture\, healthier ecosystems\, and mineral-balanced soils that support plant health and resilience.
