Tasks may shift as needs change on the site \nWhen: Saturday\, May 6th\,  9am-12pm(first Saturday of the month) \nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Pack a picnic lunch\, hop on public transit\, bike\, or drive\, and join us Saturday\, June 10th at Kellogg Creek Park as we partner with Clackamas Water Environment Services\, World Salmon Council\, Depave\, SOLVE\, and Bob’s Red Mill for a family friendly day of learning about and caring for a healthy Johnson Creek Watershed. \n\nKick off the day picking up litter with SOLVE around Kellogg Creek Park and then join us at Kellogg Creek Park for family fun. Don’t forget to bring a picnic to enjoy with family and friends. DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \nWhen: Orientation –  June 17th\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \nSurvey Season – Weekends from June 24th to October 14th. Surveys are self scheduled with your survey group. \nWhere: Indoor orientation – June 17th\, 9am-12pm\, Gresham Council Chambers\, directions emailed after RSVP.  \nOutdoor orientation – June 17th\, 1pm-4pm\, Tegart Lane pond\, corner of SW Brixton Ave and SW 43rd St in Gresham\, more directions will be provided at the indoor training.  \nSurvey Season – surveys will take place at 3 stormwater ponds in SW Gresham and Brookside Wetlands in Portland  \n  \nBOTH indoor and outdoor orientations are required to participate \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 6 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 4 surveys (about once a month) during the season. DESCRIPTION:**ATTENTION: Registration will close Friday August 18th at 12noon. Please register before this time.**\n\nThe Johnson Creek Clean-Up returns August 19th\, 2023! This is your chance to GET IN the creek and GET OUT all the trash that has accumulated over the past year. Since 2007\, volunteers like you have jumped into Johnson Creek and pulled out over 70 tons of trash from the water. Yes that’s right\, over 70 tons! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to get in the creek and remove litter from where it matters the most. See you there! \n\nArrive at your site at 9:00 am to meet your team and Creek Captain and learn how to be safe in the water. Spend ~3 hours in the creek picking up trash\, then travel to Johnson Creek Park to have lunch at 12 noon.\n\n\n\nWhat: Remove trash from Johnson Creek! Get in the water or stay on land and help remove tons of trash from in and around the creek. Stick around afterward for FREE lunch\, award ceremony and time to connect with your watershed community.\n\nWhen: Saturday\, August 19th\, from 9:00 am – 1pm\, including FREE lunch\n\nWhere: About a dozen sites throughout the watershed! See site descriptions below. Detailed directions to your site will be emailed to you before the event. Lunch will be at Johnson Creek Park. \n\nHow to register: Registration is open now!! DESCRIPTION:We are looking for the next Community Science superstars for the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Beaver Surveys! Can you believe we are headed into our eighth year of surveys! For one survey day each\, teams of 3-4 volunteers will walk a 1-mile long reach of the creek to map and collect data on beaver dams and other signs of beaver activity.  \nNo experience or gear necessary\, all instruction and gear will be provided at orientation! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \nClick here to RSVP!\nWhen: Orientation – September 2nd\, 10am-2pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel \nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct one survey during the month of September.  \nWhere: Zoom Orientation – September 2nd\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration.  \nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – September 2nd\, 12:30pm-2:00pm\, Tideman Johnson Park (address emailed after orientation).  \nSurvey Season – Surveys take place at different locations in the watershed from Crystal Springs in SE Portland to SE Gresham.  \nBOTH indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate \nTime commitment: Orientation – 4 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 1 survey during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 3 hours.  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack.  \nWe will provide: We will provide all necessary training and gear. You are welcome to bring your own waders\, life jacket\, and walking stick. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \nChildren 16 years and older are welcome to participate in surveys. \nAccessibility: These surveys require walking/standing/squatting for up to 3 hours in summer weather. Surveys require wading through Johnson Creek in water levels that can vary between ankle deep to waist deep and potentially climbing over/under downed logs. Anyone under 4ft tall is unfortunately not permitted to participate in surveys.  \nFor these surveys we use the app Anecdata to record data. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. It has been the better part of a decade since we hosted a walking tour\, and a lot has happened since then! Our walk will include stops at the confluence with Johnson Creek\, the Brannen Natural Area site\, Westmoreland Park\, followed by a peek at the creek as it passes Westmoreland Union Manor and the Eastmoreland Golf Course. SUMMARY:Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek and it’s tributaries are the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \nSurveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests (redds). Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. SUMMARY:Depave Event at Trinity Lutheran Church
DESCRIPTION:Join us with our partners at Depave to remove impermeable asphalt from the parking lot at the Trinity Lutheran Church. In the spring\, we will return to the site to plant rain gardens in replacement of the pavement. This project will reduce the water that flows from the City storm drains and into Johnson Creek\, helping to reduce pollution\, oil and trash from entering the creek. Our partners at Depave will train everyone on the best way to safely remove pavement for the day!
