DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n  \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhat: Invasive species removal\, grubbing\, and weeding. \n  \nWhen: Wednesday\, October 11th\, 2023\, 9am-12pm \n  \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \n  \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n  \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.  \n  \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. SUMMARY:Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek and it’s tributaries are the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \nSurveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests (redds). Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. You will be surveying with a team so feel free to sign-up your own or we’ll team you up with other surveyors! \nClick Here to RSVP!\n  \nWhen: Orientation – Saturday\, October 14th\, 10am-1:30pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel.  \nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct 2-3 surveys from mid-October to mid-November \nWhere: Zoom Orientation – October 14th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration \nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – October 14th\, 12:30pm-1:30pm\, Johnson Creek Park (address emailed after orientation)  \nSurvey Season: Surveys this year will take place ONLY in Crystal Springs in inner SE Portland.  \n  \nBoth indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate! SUMMARY:Depave Event at Trinity Lutheran Church
DESCRIPTION:Join us with our partners at Depave to remove impermeable asphalt from the parking lot at the Trinity Lutheran Church. In the spring\, we will return to the site to plant rain gardens in replacement of the pavement. This project will reduce the water that flows from the City storm drains and into Johnson Creek\, helping to reduce pollution\, oil and trash from entering the creek. Our partners at Depave will train everyone on the best way to safely remove pavement for the day! DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. To honor his legacy\, we will be fundraising for BIPOC led organizations working for racial justice and leading a habitat enhancement event at Powell Butte.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe know that groups and individuals often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day\, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. If you would like to participate\, we encourage everyone to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice. We recognize that people have different abilities to donate. Surveys can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers need no prior experience or equipment. All will be provided. If you have your own walking stick\, waders\, and polarized sunglasses you are welcome to bring them.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraining will include: \n\n\n\n\nHow to identify an egg mass of Pacific chorus and red-legged frogs\, and Northwestern and long-toed salamanders\n\n\n\nSurvey techniques\n\n\n\nField methods and safety\n\n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChildren are permitted at some sites: Most surveys require wading in ponds and mud that ranges from ankle deep to waist deep. Some accommodations can be made. Youth 10 years old and older are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility: These surveys require wading in ponds and mud that ranges from ankle deep to waist deep. During the training we will review the relative difficulty of each survey site which you may take into consideration when choosing which site you would like to survey. So\, we ask that you park either directly alongside Foster Road (approximate link to area: 45°28’37.3″N 122°31’03.1″W – Google Maps) or on SE 142nd Avenue\, south of Foster Road. Please be sure to not block neighbors’ driveways. Then\, walk ¼ mile down SE 141st Avenue (heading south) to the Park meeting site. Look for signs\, which will be put up ½ hour before the event. We will put up a “Volunteer Parking” sign alongside SE Foster Road and a “Volunteer Event” sign that will point you down SE 141st Avenue to the Park\, so that you know which direction to walk. DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Errol Heights
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Errol Heights\, Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, and Portland Parks & Recreation at the newly renovated Errol Heights Park for a morning of stewardship! We are working to revegetate areas that were disturbed during the recent construction. This park is home to a plethora of wildlife including beaver\, woodpeckers\, ducks\, and dragonflies! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RVSP \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWhat: Errol Heights Habitat Enhancement projects include weeding\, planting\, mulching\, and trash pick-up. These needs will change month to month. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, February 17th\, from 9:30 am – 12:30pm \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWhere: Errol Heights City Park (directions emailed after registration). \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own.   \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long\, thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWe will provide: Gloves\, and all necessary tools\, plus coffee and snacks. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact info@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 10 and up for this type of event. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. SUMMARY:2024 Watershed Wide Event
DESCRIPTION:Save the date for Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s most unified restoration event of the year! The Watershed Wide Event is happening Saturday\, March 2nd from 8:45am -12noon. We will spread out at 10 simultaneous work parties throughout the watershed. Stick around at the end for a free lunch.Johnson Creek is a unique waterway\, providing home and habitat to lots of special wildlife and a lot of human communities. This event is a great time to come together and care for the creek and watershed as we weed\, plant and mulch helping to restore a healthier watershed.  For the past 28 years\, JCWC has been proud to participate in a community dedicated to restoring\, repairing\, and cleaning Johnson Creek. Be a part of the legacy!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLEASE RSVP. Site choices are below. Click on the name of the site you would like to volunteer at and fill out the waiver to register. Want to organize a team? Email info@jcwc.org.Not interested in planting native plants but still want to help? There are jobs for multiple abilities and talents! We need helpers to pick up and deliver lunch to all of the sites\, photographers\, and helpers to get coffee and snacks to the sites in the morning. Take NW Eastman Parkway South until SW 7th Street. Take left onto SW 7th Avenue. Project site is on the south side of Creek\, east of the bridge. Meeting location and Parking: Located on the south side of Foster on SE 104th and Foster. Drive East from Portland on Foster Road past 103rd Ave. The natural area is on your right. Park in the parking lot\, or on SE Foster\, adjacent to the parking lot. PLEASE NOTE: Due to a PBOT (Portland Bureau of Transportation) lane-change\, there is now very little parking available alongside Foster Road. If there is no parking available in the parking lot or along Foster Road when you arrive\, please continue on Foster Road\, turn right at the next intersection (SE 110 th Drive)\, crossover Johnson Creek and take the first right onto SE Cooper Street. Drive to the end of Cooper Street. Parking is along Cooper Street. Watch for No Parking signs\, and be aware not to block neighbor’s driveways.
