DESCRIPTION:Update: The Beaver Walk is full!  Want to know more about beavers and their habitat? Join JCWC and our partner Bark on a Beaver Walk through Errol Heights with a casual conversation centered on beavers and the benefits they bring to natural areas. While a dusk walk increases our chance of seeing a crepuscular critter like the beaver\, their excellent hearing and sense of smell can make it a challenge to observe them in their natural habitat.  \n\n\n\nWhat: Beaver Walk at Errol Heights Park with Meg Waller from Bark. \n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday\, September\, 19th\, 6:00pm-7:30pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Errol Heights City Park (directions emailed after registration). \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and binoculars – both optional.  \n\n\n\nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather and for walking! \n\n\n\nWe will provide: Binoculars – limited number available and a guided tour. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of fun scientific exploration in the park. This year we are learning all about pollinators and decomposers. Bees\, dragonflies\, birds\, oh my! This event is great for elementary and pre-k age kids to explore the wild world of the insects\, birds\, and decomposers that help keep our plant and animal communities happy. \n\n\n\nObserve macroinvertebrates\, build a pinecone birdfeeder\, explore our sensory tables\, and learn about how pollinators and decomposers contribute to  healthy streams! \n\n\n\nRSVP not required\, but encouraged. RSVP here!\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, September 14th\, 10:00am-12:00pm. Arrive at 10am for a 30 minute presentation followed by hands on learning activities. \n\n\n\nWhere: Mill Park\, 6201 SE Overland St\, Milwaukie\, OR 97222 (directions below) \n\n\n\nWhat: Science in the Park \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: Bring a filled water bottle and some snacks! SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: OUR BEAVER SURVEYS ARE FULL FOR THE 2024 SEASON! If you’re interested in doing beaver surveys in the Portland area\, please check out our friends at The Wetlands Conservancy. Their beaver training  and surveying is similar to ours\, spans across Washington County and the Tualatin River Watershed and begins September 9th! Bark also offers beaver themed events and surveys and will be hosting a Beaver Walk with JCWC on September 19th! \n\n\n\n———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————- \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe are looking for the next Community Science superstars for the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Beaver Surveys! Can you believe we are headed into our ninth year of surveys! \n\n\n\nJoin  teams of 3-4 volunteers on a survey by walking a 1-mile long reach of the creek to map and collect data on beaver dams and other signs of beaver activity.  \n\n\n\nNo experience or gear necessary\, all instruction and gear will be provided at orientation! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \n\n\n\nWhen: Orientation – September 7th\, 10am-2pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct one survey during the month of September.  \n\n\n\nWhere: Zoom Orientation – September 7th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration.  \n\n\n\nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – September 7th\, 12:30pm-2:00pm\, Tideman Johnson Park (address emailed after orientation).  \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Surveys take place at different locations in the watershed from Crystal Springs in SE Portland to SE Gresham.  \n\n\n\nBOTH indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate \n\n\n\nTime commitment: Orientation – 4 hours \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 1 survey during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 3 hours.  \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack.  \n\n\n\nWe will provide: We will provide all necessary training and gear. You are welcome to bring your own waders\, life jacket\, and walking stick. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact info@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\nHealth and safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n\n\n\nChildren 16 years and older are welcome to participate in surveys. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: These surveys require walking/standing/squatting for up to 3 hours in summer weather. Surveys require wading through Johnson Creek in water levels that can vary between ankle deep to waist deep and potentially climbing over/under downed logs. Anyone under 4ft tall is unfortunately not permitted to participate in surveys.  \n\n\n\nFor these surveys we use the app Anecdata to record data. SUMMARY:2024 Johnson Creek Clean-up!
DESCRIPTION:The Johnson Creek Clean-Up returns August 17th\, 2024! This is your chance to GET IN the creek and GET OUT all the trash that has accumulated over the past year. Since 2007\, volunteers like you have jumped into Johnson Creek and pulled out over 70 tons of trash from the water. Yes that’s right\, over 70 tons! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to get in the creek and remove litter from where it matters the most. See you there!  \n\n\n\nArrive at your site at 8:45 am to meet your team and Creek Captain and learn how to be safe in the water. Spend ~3 hours in the creek picking up trash\, then travel to Johnson Creek Park to have lunch at 12 noon. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttention: We are having some technical difficulties with our online sign-up system. You are signed up even if you did not get a confirmation email! Reminder emails with details about your site will go out on Friday! \n\n\n\nWhat: Remove trash from Johnson Creek! Get in the water or stay on land and help remove tons of trash from in and around the creek. Stick around afterward for FREE lunch\, award ceremony and time to connect with your watershed community. \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, August 17th\, from 8:45 am – 1pm\, including FREE lunch \n\n\n\nWhere: About a dozen sites throughout the watershed! See site descriptions below. Detailed directions to your site will be emailed to you before the event. Lunch will be at Johnson Creek Park.  \n\n\n\nHow to register: Registration is open now!! \n\n\n\n1. Carefully read the site descriptions below. Each site is different and some are more physically challenging than others. \n\n\n\n2. Pick the site at which you want to volunteer. \n\n\n\n3. Register for ONLY the specific site at which you will volunteer. \n\n\n\n4. If you are coming as part of a group\, each person in your group needs to register separately. \n\n\n\n5. Check your email for site details! \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy. You will be walking in the creek in your shoes. We recommend light-weight shoes like sneakers\, running shoes\, or breathable hiking boots that will drain easily\, rather than heavy boots that will stay water-logged. Do not wear sandals\, crocs\, etc.–it’s not safe! However\, you may want to bring an extra set of footwear to change into at the end. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. \n\n\n\nWe will provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, plus free lunch at the end of the event. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact marlee@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. Sorry\, we cannot provide waders for this event. \n\n\n\nChildren unfortunately are not permitted. This event involves wading in deep water and contact with potentially harmful materials\, such as broken glass\, and is not suitable for children. Youth 14 years old and older are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event may require wading in water greater than 2 feet deep (see site descriptions for details; not all sites require wading)\, standing for long periods\, walking over uneven ground\, going up or down steep slopes\, bending\, and lifting heavy objects. DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. SUMMARY:Johnson Creek Outfall Surveys
DESCRIPTION:When storm water is redirected away from roads and other structures\, it is often funneled out through outfalls which deposit the storm water into streams like Johnson Creek. This outfall water will regularly contain varying amounts of fertilizer\, lawn chemicals\, heavy metals\, highway runoff\, and other chemicals that are toxic to salmonids and other life. JCWC is looking to photograph and record data of each outfall in the Johnson Creek watershed mainstem. This data will not only be immensely helpful in understanding how stormwater is impacting Johnson Creek\, but will also help us and our partners identify future projects and priorities both in the near and long term. Identifying sources and quality of runoff may also allow for future projects and initiatives. Volunteers will be given maps with outfall locations and may survey the sites at their own pace and may receive additional maps if desired. When surveying\, volunteers should wear clothes for a variety of environments. Items such as long pants and sleeves\, and close-toe shoes with good tread.  \n\n\n\nWhen: Training: Wednesday\, August 7th\, from 6pm – 7pm\, virtually. Surveying will continue from August through November.  \n\n\n\nWhere: All through the mainstem of Johnson Creek!  \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n\n\n\nWe will provide: maps of outfall sites\, high visibility vests \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event may require traversing a variety of environments\, walking over uneven ground\, going up or down steep slopes\, bending\, and walking near the creek. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement with Saint Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Church
DESCRIPTION:Join JCWC and the members of the St. Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Church to clear out a rain garden! We helped to install this rain garden back in 2013 and have been helping to maintain it ever since. Rain gardens help to reduce flooding\, remove pollutants from runoff\, and function as refuge for pollinators. DESCRIPTION:Help us document dragonfly and damselfly species throughout the Johnson Creek Watershed! Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are not only beautiful to look at- they are important indicator species in aquatic areas\, like the riparian zone along Johnson Creek! Entomologist extraordinaire Zee Searles Mazzacano from CASM Environmental will train volunteers in survey protocol and identification skills. \n\n\n\nNo experience necessary! This opportunity is open to all! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \n\n\n\nClick here to RSVP\n\n\n\nWhen: Orientation –  June 8th\, 9am-4pm\, with an hour lunch break. \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Weekends from June to October. Surveys are self scheduled with your survey group. \n\n\n\nWhere: Indoor training – Gresham Council Chambers (see directions below)  \n\n\n\nOutdoor training – Tegart Lane pond\, corner of SW Brixton Ave and SW 43rd St in Gresham\, more directions will be provided at the indoor training.  \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – surveys will take place at 3 stormwater ponds in SW Gresham and Brookside Wetlands in Portland  \n\n\n\nTime commitment: Orientation – 6 hours \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 3-4 surveys (about once a month) during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours (between 6-8 hours total survey time) \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle\, a snack\, and LUNCH. There are some spots to grab a quick lunch in Gresham if you want to eat out! \n\n\n\nWe will provide: We will provide nets and guide books\, but you are welcome to bring your own net\, guide\, binoculars\, and good camera. Mulch acts as an insulator\, retains water\, keeps plant competition at bay and protects from erosion. SUMMARY:Lichen Walk at Foster Floodplain with Ruth Williams
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Foster Floodplain Natural Area on as we identify common lichen found around the Johnson Creek Watershed. There will be an initial presentation on featured lichens that we’ll likely find on the subsequent walk around the natural area. \n\n\n\nRuth Williams is a consulting arborist and plant enthusiast with degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture from UC Davis. She has been drawing and painting plants for 20 years. She teaches and guides interpretive hikes on a wide variety of ecological subjects. \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER!What: An educational lichen walk! There will be an outdoor presentation on lichen that you’ll find in the watershed\, how to identify them and the important roles they play in the ecosystem. After the presentation\, we’ll take a stroll around the floodplain to use our observational skills to spot and ID lichen\, and to observe other interesting features of this natural area.When: Saturday\, March 23rd\, 2024\, 1- 3pmWhere: Foster Floodplain Natural Area (see directions below)What to bring: Water bottle\, snacks. Appropriate clothing for wet and muddy conditions.  You’re welcome to bring a hand lens as well. What to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear comfortable walking shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.What we provide: Instruction on how to identify local lichens. We will have hand lenses for participants to use during the event.
