DESCRIPTION:Our land tending event is full\, we still encourage you to donate to a BIPOC led organization.\nDue to staff capacity if you show up to the service event without prior registration you will be turned away.  \n  \nDr. Martin Luther King Junior dedicated his life to advancing civil rights and fighting racism and oppression. To honor his legacy\, we will be fundraising for BIPOC led organizations working for racial justice and leading a land tending event at Powell Butte.  \nWe know that groups and individuals often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day\, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service. If you would like to participate\, we encourage everyone to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice.  \nNot sure who to support? Here are some organizations we suggest.  \nThe Blueprint Foundation – Empowering future generations by providing culturally responsive mentoring and experiential learning opportunities along various pathways so they can build their own futures and careers. \nLove is Stronger – Through the power of love\, we build healing\, accountability\, and safety for Portland kids and families impacted by gang violence across generations. \nEthiopian and Eritrean Cultural and Resource Community – Empower Ethiopians\, Eritreans\, and other African refugees and immigrants by providing culturally appropriate services and resources that promote self-sufficiency\, integration\, and success. \nA huge thank you to Portland Parks and Recreation for helping to organize this event and to our generous funders that make the volunteer program possible. DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\nJoin the Friends of Errol Heights\, Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, and Portland Parks & Recreation as we gather at Errol Heights Park for a morning of Land Tending! We are working to revegetate areas that were disturbed during construction. This park is home to a plethora of wildlife including beaver\, woodpeckers\, ducks\, and dragonflies! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nWhat: Errol Heights Land Tending projects include weeding\, planting\, mulching\, and trash pick-up. These needs will change month to month. \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, January 18th\, from 9:30 am – 12:30pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Errol Heights City Park (directions emailed after registration). \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own.   \n\n\n\nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long\, thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! SUMMARY:No Ivy Day at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek Watershed Council and Leach Botanical Garden are teaming up for the city-wide No Ivy Day this year! Volunteers will spend the morning in the Back 5 Community Habitat Enhancement Project area at Leach Botanical Garden removing English ivy from the riparian zones and off trees to make room for native species.   \n\n\n\nJohnson Creek Watershed Council\, together with Leach Garden\, Wisdom of the Elders\, the Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, the African Youth & Community Organization\, and experts from Portland Parks & Recreation\, Portland Bureau of Environmental Services and many dedicated volunteers are restoring several acres to healthy habitat – all without the use of herbicides. The project provides hands-on educational and community science opportunities\, with an emphasis on historically disenfranchised youth and adults. In addition to restoration steps\, we assess and analyze change through surveys of plants\, amphibians and macroinvertebrates. \n\n\n\nThe Back 5 is a habitat restoration project in progress and not currently open to the public. Volunteers will be hiking and working off-trail on uneven ground. Please dress for the weather\, wear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes\, and bring a water bottle.  Instruction\, tools\, gloves\, water and snacks will be provided. SUMMARY:2024 Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek is the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \n\n\n\nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \n\n\n\nSurveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests. Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. You will be surveying with a team so feel free to sign-up your own or we’ll team you up with other surveyors! \n\n\n\nClick here to RSVP! – these surveys are in high demand please email sara@jcwc.org if you can no longer participate. \n\n\n\nWhen: Orientation – Saturday\, October 19th\, 10am-1:30pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel.  \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct 2-3 surveys from mid-October to mid-November \n\n\n\nWhere: Zoom Orientation – October 19th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration \n\n\n\nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – October 19th\, 12:30pm-1:30pm\, Johnson Creek Park (address emailed after orientation)  \n\n\n\nSurvey Season: Surveys this year will take place ONLY in Crystal Springs in inner SE Portland.  \n\n\n\nBoth indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate \n\n\n\nTime commitment: Orientation – 3.5 hours \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 2-3 surveys. Surveys typically take 2-3 hours.  \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. \n\n\n\nWe will provide: We will provide all necessary training and gear. You are welcome to bring your own waders\, life jacket\, and walking stick. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact sara@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\nHealth and safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n\n\n\nChildren 16 years and older are welcome to participate in surveys. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: These surveys require walking/standing/squatting for up to 3 hours in summer weather. Surveys require wading through Johnson Creek in water levels that can vary between ankle deep to waist deep and potentially climbing over/under downed logs. We are working to revegetate areas that were disturbed during the recent construction. DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2018 Johnson Creek Watershed Council has been working with a group of partners to restore 5 acres on the east side of Leach Botanical Garden that borders Johnson Creek. The partnership includes: Wisdom of the Elders\, Inc\, African Youth Community Organization\, The Blueprint Foundation\, David Douglas High School\, Leach Botanical Garden\, along with help from experts at Portland Parks and Recreation\, and many dedicated volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe created an awesome video and website to share what is going on with the project and partnership. SUMMARY:ASL Tour for the Deaf Community
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek Watershed Council is partnering with Leach Botanical Garden to provide an ASL Tour for the Deaf Community. The guided garden tour will be in ASL only and is geared towards Deaf visitors and their families. \n\n\n\nLight snacks and refreshments will follow the tour with an opportunity to chat in a shady spot. While areas of the garden are wheelchair accessible\, the garden tour includes areas that are sloped and unpaved. Those with limited mobility may self tour the upper garden and join the group in the meadow for refreshments after. \n\n\n\nThis event is free with garden admission of $5.00. Leach Botanical Garden offers a Garden for All program to reduce entrance cost barriers – reach out to Max mmeyers@leachgarden.org to be included in the program for this event. \n\n\n\nThe tour route is not wheelchair accessible and will be led on uneven paths and slopes\, on a mix of gravel\, steps\, and pavement. The tour will be in ASL only; no English interpretation will be available. SUMMARY:Science in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of fun scientific exploration in the park. This year we are learning all about pollinators and decomposers. Bees\, dragonflies\, birds\, oh my! This event is great for elementary and pre-k age kids to explore the wild world of the insects\, birds\, and decomposers that help keep our plant and animal communities happy. \n\n\n\nObserve macroinvertebrates\, build a pinecone birdfeeder\, explore our sensory tables\, and learn about how pollinators and decomposers contribute to  healthy streams! \n\n\n\nRSVP not required\, but encouraged. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: OUR BEAVER SURVEYS ARE FULL FOR THE 2024 SEASON! If you’re interested in doing beaver surveys in the Portland area\, please check out our friends at The Wetlands Conservancy. Their beaver training  and surveying is similar to ours\, spans across Washington County and the Tualatin River Watershed and begins September 9th! Bark also offers beaver themed events and surveys and will be hosting a Beaver Walk with JCWC on September 19th! \n\n\n\n———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————- \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe are looking for the next Community Science superstars for the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Beaver Surveys! Can you believe we are headed into our ninth year of surveys! \n\n\n\nJoin  teams of 3-4 volunteers on a survey by walking a 1-mile long reach of the creek to map and collect data on beaver dams and other signs of beaver activity.  \n\n\n\nNo experience or gear necessary\, all instruction and gear will be provided at orientation! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \n\n\n\nWhen: Orientation – September 7th\, 10am-2pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct one survey during the month of September.  \n\n\n\nWhere: Zoom Orientation – September 7th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration.  \n\n\n\nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – September 7th\, 12:30pm-2:00pm\, Tideman Johnson Park (address emailed after orientation).  \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Surveys take place at different locations in the watershed from Crystal Springs in SE Portland to SE Gresham.  \n\n\n\nBOTH indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate \n\n\n\nTime commitment: Orientation – 4 hours \n\n\n\nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 1 survey during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 3 hours.  \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack.  \n\n\n\nWe will provide: We will provide all necessary training and gear. You are welcome to bring your own waders\, life jacket\, and walking stick. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. SUMMARY:2024 Johnson Creek Clean-up!
DESCRIPTION:The Johnson Creek Clean-Up returns August 17th\, 2024! This is your chance to GET IN the creek and GET OUT all the trash that has accumulated over the past year. Since 2007\, volunteers like you have jumped into Johnson Creek and pulled out over 70 tons of trash from the water. Yes that’s right\, over 70 tons! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to get in the creek and remove litter from where it matters the most. See you there!  \n\n\n\nArrive at your site at 8:45 am to meet your team and Creek Captain and learn how to be safe in the water. Spend ~3 hours in the creek picking up trash\, then travel to Johnson Creek Park to have lunch at 12 noon. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttention: We are having some technical difficulties with our online sign-up system. You are signed up even if you did not get a confirmation email! Reminder emails with details about your site will go out on Friday! \n\n\n\nWhat: Remove trash from Johnson Creek! Get in the water or stay on land and help remove tons of trash from in and around the creek. Stick around afterward for FREE lunch\, award ceremony and time to connect with your watershed community. \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, August 17th\, from 8:45 am – 1pm\, including FREE lunch \n\n\n\nWhere: About a dozen sites throughout the watershed! See site descriptions below. Detailed directions to your site will be emailed to you before the event. Lunch will be at Johnson Creek Park.  \n\n\n\nHow to register: Registration is open now!! \n\n\n\n1. Carefully read the site descriptions below. Each site is different and some are more physically challenging than others. \n\n\n\n2. Pick the site at which you want to volunteer. \n\n\n\n3. Register for ONLY the specific site at which you will volunteer. \n\n\n\n4. If you are coming as part of a group\, each person in your group needs to register separately. \n\n\n\n5. Check your email for site details! \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy. You will be walking in the creek in your shoes. We recommend light-weight shoes like sneakers\, running shoes\, or breathable hiking boots that will drain easily\, rather than heavy boots that will stay water-logged. Do not wear sandals\, crocs\, etc.–it’s not safe! However\, you may want to bring an extra set of footwear to change into at the end. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. \n\n\n\nWe will provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, plus free lunch at the end of the event. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. This event involves wading in deep water and contact with potentially harmful materials\, such as broken glass\, and is not suitable for children. Youth 14 years old and older are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event may require wading in water greater than 2 feet deep (see site descriptions for details; not all sites require wading)\, standing for long periods\, walking over uneven ground\, going up or down steep slopes\, bending\, and lifting heavy objects. SUMMARY:Johnson Creek Outfall Surveys
DESCRIPTION:When storm water is redirected away from roads and other structures\, it is often funneled out through outfalls which deposit the storm water into streams like Johnson Creek. This outfall water will regularly contain varying amounts of fertilizer\, lawn chemicals\, heavy metals\, highway runoff\, and other chemicals that are toxic to salmonids and other life. JCWC is looking to photograph and record data of each outfall in the Johnson Creek watershed mainstem. This data will not only be immensely helpful in understanding how stormwater is impacting Johnson Creek\, but will also help us and our partners identify future projects and priorities both in the near and long term. Identifying sources and quality of runoff may also allow for future projects and initiatives. Volunteers will be given maps with outfall locations and may survey the sites at their own pace and may receive additional maps if desired. When surveying\, volunteers should wear clothes for a variety of environments. Items such as long pants and sleeves\, and close-toe shoes with good tread.  \n\n\n\nWhen: Training: Wednesday\, August 7th\, from 6pm – 7pm\, virtually. Surveying will continue from August through November.  \n\n\n\nWhere: All through the mainstem of Johnson Creek!  \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n\n\n\nWe will provide: maps of outfall sites\, high visibility vests \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event may require traversing a variety of environments\, walking over uneven ground\, going up or down steep slopes\, bending\, and walking near the creek. Each site will have different requirements so we can accommodate most physical ability levels. This survey involves potentially navigating certain hazards and uneven terrain and is not suitable for children. Youth 14 years old and older are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult.
