SUMMARY:EVENT FULL - Amphibian Egg Mass Surveys Field Training
DESCRIPTION:Join Johnson Creek Watershed Council and the City of Gresham in an effort to track amphibians in Gresham’s stormwater ponds! Surveyors will spend time wading through stormwater ponds collecting data on amphibian egg masses of four different native species. These surveys are part of a regional effort to help us learn more about amphibians and their habitats to inform conservation and restoration plans.  \n  \nWhat: Amphibian Egg Mass Surveys in Gresham \nWhen & Where:  \nOnline Training – January 26th 6:00-7:30. A Zoom link will be sent to you after registering.  \nField Training and Gear Pick-up – January 28th 10:00-12:00. Brickworks Stormwater Pond in SE Gresham\, parking and access instructions will be emailed to you after registration.  \n  \nBoth training sessions are required. \n  \nSurvey Season – Survey groups of 2-4 people will visit the assigned site(s) 3 times throughout Feb. and March . \nSurveys involve systematically wading through ponds and gathering data on amphibian egg masses. Surveys can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. \n  \nVolunteers need no prior experience or equipment. All will be provided. If you have your own walking stick\, waders\, and polarized sunglasses you are welcome to bring them.  \n  \nTraining will include: \n\n How to identify an egg mass of Pacific chorus and red-legged frogs\, and Northwestern & long-toed salamanders\n Survey techniques\n Field methods and safety\n\n  \nCovid-19 safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n  \nChildren are permitted at some sites: Most surveys require wading in ponds and mud that ranges from ankle deep to waist deep. Some accommodations can be made. Youth 10 years old and older are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult. \n  \nAccessibility: These surveys require wading in ponds and mud that ranges from ankle deep to waist deep. During the training we will review the relative difficulty of each survey site which you may take into consideration when choosing which site you would like to survey. In general surveyors should be sure-footed and able to walk and stand for up to 2 hours. Bathrooms are not available at most survey sites.  \n  \nFAQ’s \n  \nDo I need to sign-up with another person? Nope! If you sign-up solo we will assign you a survey group. \n  \nIf I want to sign-up with another person do they also have to register? Yes\, everyone in your group should register so we have an accurate count of surveyors and can make sure everyone gets gear. \n  \nHow many hours do I need to volunteer? Including training\, about 5 to 8 hours depending on drive distance. \n  \nCan children volunteer? Most sites are relatively shallow\, but are best for kids 10 and up. \n  \nHow are monitoring sites assigned? There are about 12-15 sites that we hope to monitor around the Gresham/Fairview area. Site locations and descriptions are presented at the training and people can select first\, second\, third choice or no preference and we will match everyone by preference as best we can. \n  \nA huge thank you to the City of Gresham for helping to organize this event and to our generous funders that make the volunteer program possible. Thank you to the Mintkeski Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation\, Portland General Electric\, City of Gresham\, Clackamas Water Environment Services\, and City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services.

DESCRIPTION:Calling all birders! Join our 2023 Prairie-Nesting Birds survey team! The Prairie-Nesting Bird surveys are a community science project started in 2019 to monitor grassland birds breeding in Powell Butte Nature Park. It’s a joint project between the Johnson Creek Watershed Council\, Portland Parks and Recreation\, Conservation InSight\, and amazing community scientists like you! \n  \nWhat: Powell Butte Prairie-nesting Bird Surveys \n  \nWhen & Where: \nVirtual orientation (REQUIRED) on Wednesday\, April 5th from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm  \nOne in-person training (REQUIRED) at Powell Butte Nature Park. You can sign-up for an outdoor training session after registration. Check your email! \nFriday\, April 7th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am OR \nSaturday\, April 8th from 8:00 am – 9:30 am \nBoth trainings (virtual and one in-person) are required to participate in surveys. \nSurvey Season – April through June. Two survey dates are required (two surveys per day on two different dates) sign-ups will occur during the virtual training. Surveys typically take 30-45 minutes to complete. Your two surveys are completed back to back for a total survey time of 1-1.5 hours on each survey date. Surveys are to be completed within two hours of sunrise. \n  \nHow to prepare: \nVolunteers must have a minimum of intermediate bird identification skills. You should feel comfortable identifying most of the birds you will encounter on Powell Butte. If you’re not confident in your bird ID skills but still want to be involved\, come to the online orientation! We may be able to pair you with a more experienced birder. \nVolunteers must provide their own binoculars. We have a very limited number available to borrow for the season. If you need to borrow binoculars please email Marlee@jcwc.org.  \nVolunteers need an eBird account and should have eBird downloaded and set up on their phones. All data collection will take place using the eBird app. \nDue to Portland Parks & Recreation policies a background check and volunteer application is required to participate in these surveys. Those forms will be sent to you after registration. If you have questions please contact Marlee@jcwc.org.  \n  \nCovid-19 safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n  \nAccessibility: These surveys require walking along dirt/gravel paths for up to 2 hours at a time. These surveys require the use of binoculars and the ability to identify birds by sound. Bathrooms are available for use at the visitor’s center.  \n  \nThank you to our funders and partners for supporting watershed health. East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District\, The City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services\, Conservation InSight and Portland Parks & Recreation.
