We work with thousands of volunteers each year and with a small staff\, we can’t function without the community support of volunteers like you to teach and lead in our restoration events!\n \nCreek Crew leaders choose at least 4 volunteer days a year to help JCWC staff and partner organizations guide small groups of volunteers for our native plantings\, invasive species and trash removal parties throughout the year. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \nClick here to RSVP\nWhat: Invasive species removal\, grubbing\, and weeding. \nWhen: Wednesday\, January 11th\, 2023\, 9am-12pm \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.  \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Kingsley D. Bundy Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Portland Parks & Recreation and Pleasant Valley Neighborhood Association to plant native plants on this little hidden park next to Johnson Creek. Planting native plants provides food and shelter for wildlife such as birds\, coyotes and deer. Check out the Creek in its winter glory\, and keep your eye out for wildlife as you volunteer alongside other community members—everyone welcome\, and no experience necessary! \n  \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\n  \nWhat: Planting 350-400 native plants to provide habitat for wildlife. Surveyors will spend time wading through stormwater ponds collecting data on amphibian egg masses of four different native species. These surveys are part of a regional effort to help us learn more about amphibians and their habitats to inform conservation and restoration plans. \n\n \n\nWhat: Amphibian Egg Mass Surveys in Gresham\n\nWhen & Where: \n\nOnline Training – January 26th 6:00-7:30. A Zoom link will be sent to you after registering. \n\nField Training and Gear Pick-up – January 28th 10:00-12:00. Brickworks Stormwater Pond in SE Gresham\, parking and access instructions will be emailed to you after registration. \n\nBoth training sessions are required.\n\n \n\nSurvey Season – Survey groups of 2-4 people will visit the assigned site(s) 3 times throughout Feb. and March .\n\nSurveys involve systematically wading through ponds and gathering data on amphibian egg masses. Surveys can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.\n\n \n\nVolunteers need no prior experience or equipment. All will be provided. If you have your own walking stick\, waders\, and polarized sunglasses you are welcome to bring them. \n\n \n\nTraining will include:\n\n 	 How to identify an egg mass of Pacific chorus and red-legged frogs\, and Northwestern & long-toed salamanders\n 	 Survey techniques\n 	 Field methods and safety\n\n \n\nCovid-19 safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness.\n\n \n\nChildren are permitted at some sites: Most surveys require wading in ponds and mud that ranges from ankle deep to waist deep. Some accommodations can be made. Youth 10 years old and older are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult.\n\n \n\nAccessibility: These surveys require wading in ponds and mud that ranges from ankle deep to waist deep. During the training we will review the relative difficulty of each survey site which you may take into consideration when choosing which site you would like to survey. In general surveyors should be sure-footed and able to walk and stand for up to 2 hours. Bathrooms are not available at most survey sites. \n\n \n\nFAQ’s\n\nDo I need to sign-up with another person? Nope! If you sign-up solo we will assign you a survey group.\n\nIf I want to sign-up with another person do they also have to register? Yes\, everyone in your group should register so we have an accurate count of surveyors and can make sure everyone gets gear.\n\nHow many hours do I need to volunteer? Including training\, about 5 to 8 hours depending on drive distance.\n\nCan children volunteer? Most sites are relatively shallow\, but are best for kids 10 and up.\n\nHow are monitoring sites assigned? There are about 12-15 sites that we hope to monitor around the Gresham/Fairview area.
