SUMMARY:Beaver Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for the next Community Science superstars for the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Beaver Surveys! Can you believe we are headed into our eighth year of surveys! For one survey day each\, teams of 3-4 volunteers will walk a 1-mile long reach of the creek to map and collect data on beaver dams and other signs of beaver activity.  \nNo experience or gear necessary\, all instruction and gear will be provided at orientation! Sign-up with a partner/group or sign-up on your own and you will be paired up with other volunteers! \nClick here to RSVP!\nWhen: Orientation – September 2nd\, 10am-2pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel \nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct one survey during the month of September.  \nWhere: Zoom Orientation – September 2nd\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration.  \nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – September 2nd\, 12:30pm-2:00pm\, Tideman Johnson Park (address emailed after orientation).  \nSurvey Season – Surveys take place at different locations in the watershed from Crystal Springs in SE Portland to SE Gresham.  \nBOTH indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate \nTime commitment: Orientation – 4 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 1 survey during the season. Surveys typically take between 1.5 and 3 hours.  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack.  \nWe will provide: We will provide all necessary training and gear. You are welcome to bring your own waders\, life jacket\, and walking stick. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact info@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \nHealth and safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \nChildren 16 years and older are welcome to participate in surveys. \nAccessibility: These surveys require walking/standing/squatting for up to 3 hours in summer weather. Surveys require wading through Johnson Creek in water levels that can vary between ankle deep to waist deep and potentially climbing over/under downed logs. Anyone under 4ft tall is unfortunately not permitted to participate in surveys.  \nFor these surveys we use the app Anecdata to record data. DESCRIPTION:Join Daniel Newberry\, Executive Director of JCWC\, and Noah Jenkins\, Riparian Program Manager on a biking tour of past and present restoration projects in the Johnson Creek Watershed. On this tour you will get insight into the process of restoring habitat in the riparian area including site selection\, plant selection\, and invasive removal techniques. You will also learn about the impact that restoration has on fish passage\, erosion control\, and how we are working with beavers! \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\nWhat: Biking tour along the Springwater Trail of habitat restoration sites in the Johnson Creek Watershed.  \nWhen: Tuesday\, September 12th\, 2023 from 5:30pm-7:30pm \nWhere: Meet at Westmoreland Park (directions emailed to you after registration)\, bike to Tideman Johnson Natural Area and Errol Heights. The ride is 2.5 miles one-way from Westmoreland Park to Errol Heights.  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. Participants must provide their own bike.  \nWe will provide: Snacks \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. SUMMARY:Habitat Enhancement at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in removing invasive weeds from the Leach Botanical Garden! This work helps to create new spaces and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \n  \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n  \nWhat: Invasive species removal\, grubbing\, and weeding. \n  \nWhen: Wednesday\, February 8th\, 2023\, 9am-12pm \n  \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \n  \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n  \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate.  \n  \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact info@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n  \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event \n  \nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \n  \nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \n  \nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. DESCRIPTION:Join the Crystal Springs Partnership for a walk along the creek from bottom to top\, highlighting past\, present\, and future enhancements and restoration of Crystal Springs Creek. It has been the better part of a decade since we hosted a walking tour\, and a lot has happened since then! Our walk will include stops at the confluence with Johnson Creek\, the Brannen Natural Area site\, Westmoreland Park\, followed by a peek at the creek as it passes Westmoreland Union Manor and the Eastmoreland Golf Course.
