Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \nClick here to RSVP\nWhen: Saturday\, October 7th\,  9am-12pm(first Saturday of the month) \nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat we provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. SUMMARY:Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Johnson Creek and it’s tributaries are the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \nSurveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests (redds). Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. You will be surveying with a team so feel free to sign-up your own or we’ll team you up with other surveyors! \nClick Here to RSVP!\n  \nWhen: Orientation – Saturday\, October 14th\, 10am-1:30pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel.  \nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct 2-3 surveys from mid-October to mid-November \nWhere: Zoom Orientation – October 14th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration \nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – October 14th\, 12:30pm-1:30pm\, Johnson Creek Park (address emailed after orientation)  \nSurvey Season: Surveys this year will take place ONLY in Crystal Springs in inner SE Portland.  \n  \nBoth indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate! These surveys are in high demand please email marlee@jcwc.org if you can no longer participate. \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 3.5 hours \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 2-3 surveys. Surveys typically take 2-3 hours.  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. \nWe will provide: We will provide all necessary training and gear. You are welcome to bring your own waders\, life jacket\, and walking stick. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Surveys require wading through Johnson Creek in water levels that can vary between ankle deep to waist deep and potentially climbing over/under downed logs. SUMMARY:Depave Event at Trinity Lutheran Church
DESCRIPTION:Join us with our partners at Depave to remove impermeable asphalt from the parking lot at the Trinity Lutheran Church. In the spring\, we will return to the site to plant rain gardens in replacement of the pavement. This project will reduce the water that flows from the City storm drains and into Johnson Creek\, helping to reduce pollution\, oil and trash from entering the creek. Our partners at Depave will train everyone on the best way to safely remove pavement for the day! DESCRIPTION:Please join the Crystal Springs Partnership at the  Westmoreland’s Union Manor to plant native shrubs and remove non-native weeds.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhat: We will be planting native shrubs and removing non-native weeds. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, October 29th\, 9:AM-noon \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhere: Westmoreland’s Union Manor\, 6404 SE 23rd Ave\, Portland\, OR 97202  – Please park on 23rd Ave. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: No experience necessary! Wear thick pants\, a long sleeve shirt\, and sturdy shoes. Dress for the weather and bring a full water bottle. Tools and snacks will be provided\, but you may want to bring your own gloves. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and water and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe will provide: Gloves\, and all necessary tools. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact  crystalspringscc@gmail.com to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible.
