SUMMARY:Land Tending at Tideman Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Tideman Johnson Park and the Johnson Creek Watershed Council for a morning of stewardship and land tending! Tideman Johnson is a small but sweet park along Johnson Creek and the Springwater Corridor Trail in SE Portland. No experience necessary! \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, October 4th\,  9:00 am-12:00 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Tideman Johnson City Park (directions below) \n\n\n\nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. Tasks may shift as needs change on the site. \n\n\n\nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. Bring a filled water bottle and snacks! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \n\n\n\nWhat we provide: Gloves and all necessary tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and remove invasive weeds. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact sima@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \n\n\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness. \n\n\n\nChildren are welcome: Children must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near sharp prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event. \n\n\n\nAccessibility: This event may require standing or squatting/kneeling for long periods of time\, walking over uneven ground\, bending and lifting heavy objects. Bathrooms are available for this event.  \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n\n\n\nDirections to site:  \n\n\n\nBy transit: Take Bus #75 to SE 45th/Nehalem\, then walk about half a mile west on SE Crystal Springs  Blvd. Turn south (left) onto 37th Street and go down a steep hill to the junction of the Springwater Corridor Trail and the Johnson Creek boardwalk Or take the MAX Orange Line to SE Tacoma/Johnson Creek and walk south along the Park & Ride lot to the Springwater Corridor Trail. Walk east on the Trail for a little under a mile to reach the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy bike: follow the Springwater Corridor Trail to the junction with the Johnson Creek boardwalk. \n\n\n\nBy car: park near the intersection of 37th and Tenino Streets (please be respectful of our neighbors and do not block driveways or mailboxes). SUMMARY:Land Tending at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. SUMMARY:2025 Salmon Survey Orientation
DESCRIPTION:This event is full and registration is closed!\nJohnson Creek is the only salmon bearing tributary in Eastern Portland! JCWC documents the distribution of salmon species and spawning activity throughout the watershed to inform restoration efforts and to share with our scientific partner organizations. \nSalmon are integral to the Pacific Northwest and to Johnson Creek. These amazing fish migrate from their natal streams\, to the ocean\, and back again to spawn. They also play important roles in the cultures and histories of Native Nations to this area. Since 2011\, JCWC volunteers have been studying the creek for Coho and Chinook salmon and their nests\, which are called redds. Join us this year for surveys! \nThe surveys are designed for all levels of mobility through in stream\, bank\, and stationary surveys. In stream surveys include suiting up in waders and life jackets and wading through Johnson Creek during winter flows looking for live salmon\, carcasses\, and nests. Surveys usually take about 3 hours and are scheduled in your own time. You will be surveying with a team so feel free to sign-up your own or we’ll team you up with other surveyors! \nThese surveys are in high demand please email sara@jcwc.org if you can no longer participate.  \nWhen: Orientation – Saturday\, October 18th\, 10am-1:30pm\, with an hour break for lunch and travel.  \n  \nSurvey Season – Surveyors will conduct 2-3 surveys from mid-October to mid-November \n  \nWhere: Zoom Orientation – October 18th\, 10am-11:30am\, Zoom link emailed to you after registration \n  \nOutdoor Orientation and Gear Pick-up – October 18th\, 12:30pm-1:30pm\, Johnson Creek Park (address emailed after orientation)  \n  \nSurvey Season: Surveys this year will take place ONLY in Crystal Springs in inner SE Portland.  \n  \nBoth indoor and outdoor orientation are required to participate \n  \nTime commitment: Orientation – 3.5 hours \n  \nSurvey Season – Sign-up for 2-3 surveys. Surveys typically take 2-3 hours.  \nHow to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine\, so dress for weather: rain coat\, warm layers\, sun hat\, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack. \nWe will provide: We will provide all necessary training and gear. You are welcome to bring your own waders\, life jacket\, and walking stick. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact sara@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. \nHealth and safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Surveys require wading through Johnson Creek in water levels that can vary between ankle deep to waist deep and potentially climbing over/under downed logs. DESCRIPTION:This year’s symposium highlights the latest research and restoration projects shaping Johnson Creek and its surrounding ecosystems. From amphibian field guides to floodplain and wetland restoration\, long-term data analysis\, and the Confluence Project\, presenters will share discoveries that reveal how our watershed is changing—and what that means for the future. \nCome learn from local scientists\, graduate students\, and practitioners working to better understand and restore the health of Johnson Creek. \n  \nTo see the full line-up of speakers and purchase tickets\, click here!\n  \nWhat: Johnson Creek Science Symposium. Tickets $10. \nWhen: Tuesday\, October 21st\, 1pm-5pm. The program starts promptly at 1pm. If you arrive after 1pm you will be let in during a break in programming. There will be a 30 minute break during the programming with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments available. \nWhere: Reed College Performing Arts Building Room 320\, 3017 SE Woodstock Blvd\, Portland\, OR 97202. Parking is available in the Reed College West Parking Lot. \nWhat to bring: Your burning questions on all things Johnson Creek Science!
