SUMMARY:Land Tending at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Gather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes for uneven terrain that you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and what plants we’ll remove.  \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and on uneven terrain which can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event \nDirections to site:  \nBy transit: Take route #73 or #10 to SE Foster & 122nd. Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Errol Heights\, Portland Parks & Recreation\, and Johnson Creek Watershed Council as we gather at Errol Heights Park for a morning of Land Tending! Revegetation\, selective plant removal\, and trash pick-up encourages plant and species diversity and builds habitats for a healthy watershed. \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP\nWhen: Saturday\, January 17th\,  9:00 am-12:00 pm \nWhere: Errol Heights City Park (directions emailed after registration) \nWhat: Native plantings\, litter pickup\, and invasive weed removal. DESCRIPTION:This event is full\nJoin Johnson Creek Watershed Council and the City of Gresham in an effort to track amphibians in Gresham’s stormwater ponds! Surveyors will spend time wading through stormwater ponds collecting data on amphibian egg masses of four different native species. These surveys are part of a regional effort to help us learn more about amphibians and their habitats to inform conservation and restoration plans.  \n  \nWhat: Amphibian Egg Mass Surveys in Gresham \nWhen & Where:  \nOnline Training – January 29th 6:00pm-7:30pm. A Zoom link will be sent to you after registering.  \nField Training and Gear Pick-up – January 31st 10:00am-12:00noon. Brickworks Stormwater Pond in SE Gresham\, parking and access instructions will be emailed to you after registration.  \nBoth training sessions are required. \nSurvey Season – Survey groups of 2-4 people will visit the assigned site(s) 3 times throughout Feb. and March . \nSurveys involve systematically wading through ponds and gathering data on amphibian egg masses. Surveys can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. \nVolunteers need no prior experience or equipment. All will be provided. If you have your own walking stick\, waders\, and polarized sunglasses you are welcome to bring them.  \nTraining will include: \n\nHow to identify an egg mass of Pacific chorus and red-legged frogs\, and Northwestern & long-toed salamanders\nSurvey techniques\nField methods and safety\n\nHealth and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required\, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. During the training we will review the relative difficulty of each survey site which you may take into consideration when choosing which site you would like to survey. In general surveyors should be sure-footed and able to walk and stand for up to 2 hours. Bathrooms are not available at most survey sites.  \n  \nFAQ’s \nDo I need to sign-up with another person? Nope! If you sign-up solo we will assign you a survey group. \nIf I want to sign-up with another person do they also have to register? Yes\, everyone in your group should register so we have an accurate count of surveyors and can make sure everyone gets gear. \nHow many hours do I need to volunteer? Including training\, about 5 to 8 hours depending on drive distance. \nCan children volunteer? Most sites are relatively shallow\, but are best for kids 10 and up. \nHow are monitoring sites assigned? There are about 12-15 sites that we hope to monitor around the Gresham/Fairview area.
