SUMMARY:Land Tending at Leach Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Gather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary! \nThe Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry\, English ivy\, and other plants that discourage diversity. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again! \nThank you for volunteering to join us in opening spaces to promote a healthy ecosystem in the Leach Botanical Garden! Volunteers are encouraged to enjoy the rest of the garden after the event. \nClick Here to RSVP \nQuestions? Email sara@jcwc.org \nWhat: land tending\, trail maintenance\, and weeding. \nWhen: Wednesday\, September 9th\, 2026\, 9am-12pm \nWhere: Leach Botanical Garden (see directions below) \nWhat to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools\, if you want to use your own. \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, and sturdy shoes for uneven terrain that you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen\, as appropriate. \nWhat we provide: Gloves\, tools\, and instruction on how to safely use tools and what plants we’ll remove.  \nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and on uneven terrain which can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event \nDirections to site:  \nBy transit: Take route #73 or #10 to SE Foster & 122nd. Walk about 0.2 miles south on SE 122nd Ave to the main entrance to the garden. \nBy bike: Take the Springwater Corridor Trail east\, then turn right on 122nd Ave. Cross SE Foster Rd\, then turn left into the main entrance. Or bike east on SE Foster Rd and turn right onto SE 122nd Ave\, then left into the main entrance. \nBy car: Take SE Foster Rd east and turn right on SE 122nd Ave. Park at the upper parking lot at the main entrance. (If you find yourself going down a steep hill you have gone too far!) Meet at the main entrance near the admissions kiosk. Do not leave any valuables in your car! \nClick Here to RSVP \nA big thank you to The Mintkeski Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation and Portland General Electric for their generous funding for our volunteer program.
