Beaver Surveyor Orientation 2021

August 17 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

We are looking for the next Community Science superstars for the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Beaver Surveys!

For one survey day each, teams of 2-3 volunteers will walk a 1-mile long reach of the creek to map and collect data on beaver dams and other signs of beaver activity. For more information, check out our Beavers Surveyors page as well as our “Beavers in Johnson Creek” Story Map for a tour of the beaver dams found in 2016!

Join us for virtual Orientation August 17th 6-7pm, where staff from JCWC, will give you all of the training required to safely conduct the survey. At the end of the field season, your data will help us better understand how we can work with beavers to restore the watershed’s health and function.

No experience required, but registration is – PLEASE REGISTER BELOW!

HOW THE SURVEY WORKS: Volunteers will team up in pairs to walk 1-mile reaches of Johnson Creek and its tributaries, documenting beaver dams and activity along the way. Volunteers should anticipate walking for one mile over rough/uneven terrain on streambanks and/or in the water while in warm to hot weather conditions.

For these surveys, we will be providing waders and other safety equipment. This season we will be using a web-based and mobile platform called Anecdata to collect the beaver data! If you have a smartphone, please download the app and create an account. There will also be a paper form option.

WHEN: Thursday, August 17 2021, 6pm-7pm

WHERE: Virtual- you will get a link to join after registration

REGISTER: Complete the form HERE– after you finish the waiver you will be redirected automatically to another page to sign up for the webinar.

COVID-19 Protocol: Training will be virtual and in person survey groups will be asked to follow public health and safety guidelines regarding COVID-19. Surveyors are recommended to wear masks when close to others or members of the public.
