No Ivy Day
Johnson Creek Watershed Council and Portland Parks and Recreation are teaming up for the city-wide No Ivy Day this year! Volunteers will spend the morning at Knapp Falls removing English ivy from the riparian zones and off trees to make room for native species to thrive.
This 6-acre natural area is in the Lents neighborhood and is a tributary of the Johnson Creek watershed. It is part of the broader network of natural areas in outer Southeast Portland that protect water quality, provide wildlife corridors, and buffer residential neighborhoods from the seasonal flooding that historically affected the Johnson Creek floodplain. It is an obscure, quiet ecological area that has a hidden waterfall called Knapp Falls; a seasonal cascade that forms during the fall and then disappears during the summer when the creek goes dry.

What: Join us and Portland Parks and Recreation to remove English ivy
When: October 24, 2026, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Where: Knapp Falls, 10368 SE Knapp Street Portland, OR 97266 .
How to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine, so dress for weather: rain coat, warm layers, sun hat, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy, close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack.
We will provide: Instruction, tools, gloves, water and snacks will be provided. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact amandeep@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare.
Health and Safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness.
Children are welcome at this event if accompanied by an attentive adult.
Accessibility: Terrain is hilly and uneven in places. This event may require standing for long periods, walking over uneven ground, going up or down steep slopes, bending, and lifting heavy objects. The project area includes walking uphill on an unpaved path, kneeling and bending down and walking on sloped and uneven ground. A portable restroom (not ADA compliant) will be available at this site.

Driving: Look for PP&R signs to guide you to the park entrance. There is off-street parking on SE Knapp Street
Tri-met: From the intersection of SE Flavel Street and SE 92nd, take Flavel St east (cross under I-205) and take the first left onto SE Knapp Street (if you end up going up the hill on Mt. Scott Blvd., you have missed the turn). The natural area is ¼ mile east on SE Knapp Street on your right.
