As we get ready to celebrate another Earth Day, JCWC recognizes the countless partners and volunteers that are behind the work. Whether it’s an Earth Day celebration or the many events that happen throughout the year that contribute to healthier habitats, your contribution is valued. JCWC works with multiple partners, funders, and volunteers to build resilience through land tending, monitoring, and habitat construction.
Our regular land tending events lean on jurisdictional partners, Friends groups, and Creek Crew Leaders to organize their community, provide resources, and show up. Monthly events at Tideman Johnson, Errol Heights, and Leach Botanical Garden’s Back 5 continue because of this dedication and the vast amount of community members who continue to volunteer. Annual and monthly land tending events are held throughout the watershed and are supported and funded through many sources.

We are able to monitor projects through our 5 Community Science programs. The programs depend on our partners, volunteers, and private organizations, Conservation InSight (Tom Virzi) and CASM Environmental (Zee Searles Mazzacano), to collect data on public and private lands that may indicate if restoration is successful or needed and where species are located. The help from the community increases the amount of data that organizations with funding restrictions are able to collect.
Habitat restoration in the creek is typically a multi year project that involves jurisdictional partners, contractors, landowners, and staff. Recreating areas that are suitable for salmon during various stages is complicated and requires significant support. Projects include, but are not limited to, large wood installations, fish passage removals, and returning the creek to a more natural flow with spawning and salmon nursery habitats. The work can be seen throughout the watershed and our data indicates that salmon are returning to more reaches!
While we can’t fully capture the amount of appreciation we have for everyone that has been involved with JCWC the past 30 years, we know we couldn’t do any of this work without the support and funding from our community. Thank you!
